When I see a politician who stands up for trans rights, even though I am a cis white man, I know that is a politician who will stand up for the most oppressed group in America, and therefore will stand up for everyone, trans, gay, straight, Black, Latin, Asian, anyone.

I remember a story I read, many years ago, by a reporter in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, about being stopped at a checkpoint, and menaced by an unstable teenager with an AK-47. When you make angry young men a law unto themselves things get terrifying terrifyingly fast.

This is why the founders were afraid of standing armies. The US has only gotten away with having, essentially, a standing army, because we've had such a strong tradition that the military must never be used for civilian law enforcement.

It’s hard to imagine even a hardened gang of criminals acting like this: pointing weapons at the crowd, brandishing an automatic weapon, randomly beating up the woman whose car they hit. It’s like something you’d hear about an occupying army doing.

This is insane. I feel like I’m going insane when I’m watching this. Not just the fact that it’s clearly their fault, but the way a heavily-armed squad of masked thugs immediately jumps into the street and brutalizes the woman they just hit, despite having no idea who she is.
