Purgatory 6/10/2025

Everyone has their towering walls of prints and stickers, but I make heavy ass books and need to innovate on my presentation.

Anyway online I don’t have to build any shelves linktr.ee/detectiveken
October 6 2025.
This week, Ken has a colonoscopy and he’s still getting over it. The prep took days and the sedation didn’t work but even now, a week later, he’s still adjusting back.
Elsewhere DCAF happened. Ken’s been iterating on his table set up to add some verticality but it still needs a lot of work. Meanwhile, his tablemate had been getting street passes on a 3DS and Ken was struggling to keep up sales wise

Looking through a Google doc now. It really does be favouring a type of game. I'll have to take a few chances

Eden. Has a little tree and sunset icon in the Play Store
detectiveken.bsky.social
Had to try it when the emulator went live and saw some people talking about how baffling it is PS2 emulation is still tough, but Switch can be a breeze
detectiveken.bsky.social
Anyway, probably good for phones too. The Eden emulator is in the play store. Just needs prod keys and firmware to load a game

Obvious downside is the 4:3 screen for widescreen games, but hey. Some of the least intensive games on that console cost way too much so I'll take the alternative to do a bit of night reading

Reporting in because I got my Anbernic RG406H to play Switch games. Haven't tried anything more intensive than a visual novel but even without the power boost, results are so far outstanding.

Shout out to the several years I had a faulty cable on my Bamboo and my lines were incapable of even tapering. This pen does that, so I have zero complaints.

It apparently doesn’t have pressure sensitivity (like the current cheapest first party Pencil) but it does kinda? Something to watch for when doing anything other than what I always do… stone cold inking. Really, I’m just the kind of artist who’ll survive without.

Upgraded my iPad (Literally moved from the 2017 iPad Pro to the 2018, and it feels several generations newer) and it supports some cheaper Pencil alternatives, so I grabbed one for €20 and here’s a Bret Hart I doodled with it.

International folk who'd like to support the Irish indie comic scene: this is a great way to do it!

You get a lovely portrait of your pet by an Irish artist and The Dublin Comic Arts Festival raises enough money to cover our deposit for our 2026 dates!

DCAF FUNDRAISER! From €5! Pet portraits now available! Our very talented committee members have donated their time for a 5-min portrait fundraiser. To help cover the cost of running DCAF in 2026.

The Basic Income news has sadly reignited my social media relationship. Apologies, I have to leave again. It's tax month after all.

Realised last night that I'm the only one sleeping on the same mattress as when we moved into this house 20 years ago, and waking up with a sore back every morning has become (thankfully) my only major health problem of late.
Real surprised that mattresses cost a lot less than €800 actually.

Posted to the Southern Reach Reddit...
Southern Reach told me Area X keep eatinh his expeditions so I asked how many expeditions he has and he said he just goes to the shelter and gets a new expeditions afterwards so I said it sounds like he's just feeding expeditions to Area X and then his daughter started crying.

(adapting a tweet about coyotes eating cats)

This program has proven to be a net good, returns the investment and overall improves artistic output and lives. I just think this is a half measure to do less work by doing the pilot scheme 2: electric boogaloo
detectiveken.bsky.social
The Arts Council was asking for an extra 60 million this year, which will fund 3500+ artists on the BIA. Let alone that their current budget could find all original applicants. The AC funds less individuals than the current BIA cohort, with more than 4 times the budget!
detectiveken.bsky.social
I know I'm in the unique position to comment on this as a recipient and not just accept permanence as stated, but let's look at some numbers for a second.
detectiveken.bsky.social
Looks like it's official. The pilot scheme applicants will end payments in February, to make way for a different 2000 applicants. I'm baffled. I'm fine with the pilot ending, but not for just the same small number to come in.
detectiveken.bsky.social
Uncertain what this BIA permanence means for those on the pilot scheme. If it's just 2000 total and scrapping the people on the pilot, that is a strange choice. They can afford 4000, actually. That number is still low, and it should be expanded if it's going to continue.

There's an inexplicable frog art economy and dammit I want in

Seriously considering another From Software illustration book, but everything reimagined as frogs and toads
