Hi, I'm Hagai, I write comics and occasionally prose, and criticism thereof. Most of my comics can be read online for free, or purchased on a pay-what-you-want basis on Gumroad and Itch.io.

Always on the lookout for new collaborators, projects, and criticism outlets.

Obviously the same question should be asked if you’re doing the lettering manually, but it’s easier to maintain the consistency—or, rather, harder to *lose* the consistency—when both of the elements are based on your own physical gestures

I don’t think digital lettering always looks bad, but when it does it’s almost always because of a failure to consider the textural cohesion between the lettering and the rest of the art. The question to ask yourself is “Do these elements look like they belong on the same surface together?”

one wonders how the trajectory of altcomix would have changed if I NEVER LIKED YOU and PAYING FOR IT had been published under their original titles

The genuine answer is JORDAN WELLINGTON LINT. Not a “horror” comic but it scares me in the same way that David Foster Wallace does: “This is what actual human life can look like. This is what actual human life *does* look like, and you can’t escape it, and to hope for more would be foolish.”
What is the scariest comic you’ve ever read?

Can I sign your cast?

“Cast” is a 16-page comic written by me, drawn by @aaronlosty.bsky.social, colored by Aaron and @marissadraws.bsky.social, and lettered by @illusclaire.bsky.social. You can read it below or purchase a hi-res .pdf on Itch:

5 minute study of a rat sitting like people.
Very quick ink sketch of a rat, sitting on its butt.

Last year I started commissioning artists to draw pieces based on songs I like, and ahead of Thought Bubble I commissioned Anna Readman (one of my favorite cartoonists) to draw a piece based on “Train Song” by Vashti Bunyan (one of the two best songs of all time imho):

it’s got the single most perplexing description of a penis that I’ve ever encountered!

It didn’t last time I checked, so I just forgot to check again, and now it does! So I’ll probably watch it this week.

Still haven’t found a download! I’m waitin’ patiently…
Have you finally seen the Spiegalman doc?

Yeah, I’ve read all of his Avery Hill books. 2120 is maybe my least favorite, and I’m not a huge fan to start with.
Have you read George Wylesol’s 2120 yet?

I don’t remember how many Vertigo relaunches there have been during my time reading comics—there was the 2015 one, and the 2018, and iirc I think there were some attempts between then and now as well—and I don’t think any of them had anything new to offer in my eyes.

I haven’t really looked at the slate of titles, but ultimately: about as meaningless as doing “EC Comics” in 2025. In the age of Image and BOOM! and Oni and Vault and what have you—all lines vying, more or less, for the same identity—the poignancy of Vertigo as a unique “brand” is diluted.
Thoughts on the “Vertigo” revival?
