the way these places are run, even good ones, is an immense infraction on your autonomy. you do not get choose when to sleep, when to eat, when to go outside, when to do homework, when to bathe, when to practice your hobbies, when to socialise, even using the bathroom is subject to scrutiny.

mental health wards frequently take the locks out of patients' bedroom doors or freely pass around the master key between employees, locking your bedroom door is often a punishable offence or a freedom you have to earn with good behaviour. make no mistake, psych wards are prisons in all but name.

many "locked" facilities in the country are run in tandem with juvenile prisons (meaning for example the east wing is prison and the west wing is the psych ward) or were transformed from prisons to juvenile psych wards. often these institutions don't institute personnel changes!!!

mind you this was one of the top wards in the country!!! the standard of care was certified "very high" by inspection for fun reasons such as:
- having trained nurses on night shift
- carers were social workers, not security guards
- patients were allowed to lock their doors at night

at some point an older teen was caught several times stealing batteries from the smoke alarm to swallow them and instead of caging it off or something they kept the batteries out. meaning if the building caught fire there would be no smoke detector to activate the sprinklers. HEALTH CARE!

- multiple nurses on the locked ward were known to sell cigarettes, laxatives, sleeping pills and nail clippers to patients (take a guess as to what the latter was used for i'm sure you can figure it out)
- the same nurses would put you on isolation if they caught you using any of their "products"

some other gems:
- they forced a muslim boy to eat pork (he was 13 and there because of a suicidal gesture, not eating disordered in any way)
- we were not allowed to wear long-sleeved t shirts because it would supposedly ward off self-harm if everyone could see your wounds

i am talking absolutely petty arguments that would end in 30 minute screaming matches between "carers" and a girl on my ward about whether or not she was allowed to forego a spoonful of sour cream in her soup (she was lactose intolerant)
discohowell.bsky.social
thinking about when i was on the psych ward and they didn't allow the patients with eating disorders to make literally any choices about their own bodies. im sure that was really good for their "trying to have control over my body" illness

if i get chosen to do this for all of the dates i will still make less than 50 eur but whatever money is money

don't get me wrong i'm glad this class gave us a day off. but it's weird to not give us a reading week for when we had to read A Room of One's Own and Three Guineas in the same week, but you do give us a reading week for reading at most 60 pages of extremely facile prose

the job so seriously and treated us like peers. idk if this helps at all but i think something we often forget about non-authoritarian teaching is that it doesn't have to be structureless or devoid of expectations; you can have an equals approach and still request your students to make an effort.

literary essay, practicing close readings from the assigned literature, being spoken to like adults, having expectations placed on us. he did not take attendance but didn't allow people in class who hadn't done the reading and after 2 weeks we were having extremely useful sessions because he took

also just saying... part of the reason why this class ended up being good in spite of his inexperience was that there were no presentations wasting away a third of the teaching time. all four hours of seminar time were dedicated to us interfacing with his knowledge and going over what makes a good

it just makes me so maddd!!! IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE THIS WAAAAYYYY

making people take didactics classes and easing them into teaching with practice sessions with more experienced teacher is a basic element of all other teaching courses from preschool to technical college, but when it's university level suddenly we think we're too good to learn how?

undergrad class, foundations of academic writing, was taught by a phd student who had never taught before. it was so inappropriate for him to be tasked with such an important course, he was great but clearly stressed out and i wish it could have been a better experience for him.

IT IS SO RIDIC!!! it's not fair on the students nor the instructor, it puts so much pressure on both parties and always the administration is just like "well you (almost) have a degree, figure out" and it's like... subject expert does not equal, in fact has never equalled, a good teacher. my first

it depends on your play style but i like to build realistic houses for my sims and then play out their lives to the end, build generations etc. an EP has not been able to improve for me since... growing together. if u like to do the same i recommend laundry day, kids room, toddler, and tiny living

i truly think there is not a single sims 4 expansion pack that is worth the standard cost of 40 usd/eur/35 pounds. i hate to say it but in terms of value for money i think 4 stuff packs are a better deal!!

their search function not prioritising your listening habits is so irritating too like Omg if i search for "caroline" how hard could it be to show me artists that are have caroline in their name in my library instead of showing me caroline polacheck every time, an artist i have never played
