honestly i'm flattered. not sure i've earned the name, but it's who i'd like to be. if that makes sense?
djnavarro.blacksky.app
that also makes sense. if i had the ability to control either my hourly rate or the total budget it would be easier, but it is what it is

in an ideal world, both clients pay for 1 weeks work (or whatever the appropriate weighted average is). because what happens right now is that both clients pay for 1 hours work and the data analyst gets fucked

fuck it. done. and thank you. 💕

on the plus side, blacksky is a thing. grateful to the generosity of the team who put this together. oh, and yes, new handle

i feel very down on bluesky at the moment.

thankfully i don't have a subscription so i can't read the article, but i'm going to guess that the author doesn't care even the tiniest bit about what happens to trans women in men's prisons. when rape happens to us, it's just accepted that we deserve it.

i am pretty angry at bluesky at the moment. would not be at all upset at the prospect of migrating the account to blacksky, at least to the extent that adding a generic white tgirl would not be too awkward

chelsea i wasted so many of my academic years thinking about how scientific measurement maps inexactly onto statistical measure theory, and what that means on the ground. and like, what, we're just gonna admit it's all just counting and the reals are a lie??? i... actually i am on board with this

On reflection, the sad thing about this episode is that over the last few years tech companies have forced LLM integrations on users so recklessly that the assumption of good faith died a long time ago. It genuinely didn't even occur to me that it was just a bug
djnavarro.blacksky.app
The reason I freaked out is spelled out here. I work in pharma and cannot risk having LLM integration enabled by default when I'm working with client data. I've spent most of this year trying to disable the extremely risky AI integrations that many companies are pushing on users, and I panicked
djnavarro.blacksky.app
it's also extremely dangerous for users who work in regulated industries. the potential for accidentally passing commercial-in-confidence data to an unauthorised third party is unacceptably high when you start inserting LLM links into console messages. this "feature" needs to be opt-in, not opt-out
djnavarro.blacksky.app
I posted this yesterday and was distressed at what looked like LLM prompts being pushed into the positron console by default. Evidently it's just a bug (details below). I am relieved. Reposting in order to correct the misconception implied by my original post, and also because now it's just funny 🫠
an R error message at the positron console with silly AI prompts popping up in places they shouldn't be. it is apparently a bug, so now it's funny not infuriating
djnavarro.blacksky.app
turns out it's a bug - they do have the assistant but it's not supposed to be enabled by default. i'm relieved
djnavarro.blacksky.app
Thanks Julia. I genuinely panicked when I saw this. In a moment I'll delete the original thread to avoid spreading my panic further. Sorry, LLM intrusions into without opt-in user consent have gotten so pervasive now that I thought it was deliberate. Didn't even occur to me that it was a bug
djnavarro.blacksky.app
Evidently it's a bug and shouldn't be enabled by default. Thank god. I seriously thought posit had just collectively lost their minds. LLM intrusiveness has gotten so bad over the last 12 months that the assumption of good faith re LLMs is long dead. Anyway, I'm relieved.
djnavarro.blacksky.app
Oh thank god. I freaked out when I saw it. Tech companies have been forcing LLMs into everything lately, creating so many risks of accidental data breaches. I just assumed it was deliberate. I'll probably delete the original thread in a moment and repost something less panicky
djnavarro.blacksky.app
I freaked out about it too for exactly the same reason. I'm relieved it's just a bug: it's been happening so often with every other software tool provided through corporate vendors that I assumed it was intentional behaviour. I'll probably delete the original thread, actually. No need to sow panic

I've been really liking positron as an IDE until now, and sincerely hope they will revert the astonishingly poor decision to force their pet LLM into the R console by default. If this is really where they're going with it I am going to have to learn ESS or something

Yeah I haven't seen it in RStudio either, it's just Positron - and only the latest release. It wasn't in the previous one. It's awful, and incredibly buggy: it's like it never even occurred to them to see what happens if the user doesn't have any LLM tools set up on their system at all
djnavarro.blacksky.app
I'm so angry. Up to this point I've really been enjoying Positron. It's felt like a best of both worlds merge between RStudio and VSCode. Yes, it does have the "Positron Assistant" but up till now it's been unobtrusive. But this is *horribly intrusive*, and I'm wondering if I made the wrong choice
djnavarro.blacksky.app
it's fucking posit doing it. specifically, they've pushed their positron assistant prompts *into the fucking console message*. it does that even if you don't use the assistant and haven't set up a provider. so the links don't even work: they just open a useless window you can't get rid of
