If I become a politician, my pitch:

We can have a yearslong orgy of hating, hurting, killing each other.

History records people choosing that.

We definitely can.

We also know for sure that after, when many of us are dead, all our problems will be worse.

Hannan will definitely know that research evidence is clear: socioeconomic disadvantage, not ethnicity, is the main driver of violent crime disparities in the UK.

But that’s no use to an amoral political opportunist whose pals have been running things for decades.

All of which I saw as inherited from the whole ‘crown service’ thing.
At the centre, you’re first and last a courtier. You serve the centre and, of course, jockey for position. The public are mainly there to be coped with and extract data from, to prove whatever your latest point is.

Consistent with my experience working in Westminster ministry.

We spoke of ‘out in the field’ with laboured magnanimity. Frontline workers simultaneously patronised, dizzyingly rearranged at will.

We were the ones who knew. The public, staff outside the centre, were problems not fellow citizens.

Covert exclusions. Detentions!! I could weep.
At traffic lights this summer I heard mother in another car on speakerphone arguing through tears w school about total impossibility for her of after-school detentions. Wanted to stop traffic, support her, cos been there. So much needless suffering.

Yes this is so important!
Our children are currently cells in spreadsheets serving the performance targets used to justify multi-academy trust boss’ grotesque salaries.
Been a parent of kids in school system for 35 years and I’ve watched its collapse into inhumane corporate shambles.
