Marvellous Minoan clay vessels made by creative potters on the island of Crete during the Aegean Bronze Age around 3,500 years ago! 🤩

From the Aegean Bronze Age, Minoan clay vessels with black handpainted decoration.on a pale biscuity-coloured slip

Top left - clay flask decorated in Minoan ‘Marine Style’’ with an octopus with tentacles writhing around the body of the vase. Additional motifs such as seaweed and rocks represent the seabed. From Palaikastro, 1500-1450 BC

Top right - clay rhyton in the shape of a bull’s head. A rhyton is a type of pouring vessel used for filling cups or making liquid offerings. There is a pouring hole at the bull’s mouth. From Knossos Little Palace, 1450-1375 BC

Bottom left - Nautilus vessel - clay rhyton depicting the seabed with nautili, corals and seaweed. From Phaistos Palace, 1500-1450 BC

Bottom right - Basket shaped rhyton decorated with double-axe motif. There is a small pouring hole in one of the bottom corners. From Pseira, 1500-1450 BC

After a long pause, I've just done another England Covid & NHS update as we head into the autumn/winter season.

TLDR: we're in a significant Covid wave now, the NHS is stretched, get boosted if you're eligible.

Truely impressive - long term strategic investment in solar from China.

Contrast that with the chop and change policies of the West.

The UK’s independent scientific bodies are highly vulnerable to politicisation - over the past 5 months I've been working with @martinmckee.bsky.social to map out their vulnerabilities and it's not good news.

Today our report is published!

UK’s arm’s length public bodies are highly vulnerable to politicisation
Seven in ten Britons say it is important for top scientific institutions to be independent in exclusive new polling.

The Severe Storms RGB helps spot dangerous thunderstorms fast by showing what’s happening at the tops of clouds. It combines data on moisture, light, & heat to reveal where tall, icy storm clouds are building - a sign of hail, strong winds, & lightning ahead.

What do they want their community, and wider UK, to be like in the future ?

And how will they know that they have got what they voted for ?
dpmanchee.bsky.social
Some of those interviewed say they would never vote Labour again.

Is that true even if Labour increased investment in public services, and take a stronger stand against racism ?

What do they expect Reform UK will do on issues like welfare state, workers rights, and public services ?
dpmanchee.bsky.social
We should try to ensure that our political identity does not dominate our thinking.

Question. Ask why. Ask what is fact and what is opinion.

But above all else try not to fall down a rabbit hole.
dpmanchee.bsky.social
Farage and Reform are no doubt very happy that the media's focus is on immigration rather than the other policies that make a bigger difference to every day lives (if done properly).

When they actually told about Nigel Farage's position on, say workers rights, some are shocked.
dpmanchee.bsky.social
Great piece by @sachahilhorst.bsky.social on Reform voters, and their thoughts on Farage's narrative of political renewal.

I'm still unclear on what concrete steps they want Reform to take ?

Public Services ? Welfare state ? Business ? Policies on workers rights ? Tax ?

Sacha's work presented here is a fascinating and sensitive deep dive into how de-industrialisation has been felt, understood, and interpreted in the places Reform is now winning, with reflections on what it means for Labour's political strategy
sachahilhorst.bsky.social
So much talk about Reform voters, but I'm yet to read much about their lives beyond tropes and excuses ('legitimate concerns').

I've been back in the midlands to interview people and learn more. Here's my piece on them and Reform's attempts to present itself as a community-minded, pro-worker party:

Given UN Commission report yes'y only wide-ranging suspension, removing trade concessions, stopping co-operation, sanctions, import/export bans, ... will do.

Doesn't help that there is no linkage between different components of international law, e.g. b/w TFEU/WTO/GATT and the Genocide Convention.

But all items left behind were crushed when rockets destroyed the 13-storey al-Kawthar building on Sunday. The IDF said it was targeting ‘Hamas terrorist infrastructure.’”
