Other than that it's a walky-talky simulator with friends along the way™.

I kinda find MSQ/questing a drag in this regard, because I get way more fun out of a MULTIPLAYER session with my partner by doing roulettes or something.

Sitting in the same room logged on at the same time reading the same quests on separate PCs.

We follow each other in the open world and the most exciting part of this questing experience is getting to DP the random mobs a quest will sometimes toss at you.

It's just not a very multiplayer friendly game, from this angle.

You're stuck doing all this single player questing and then it finally drops nuggets of multiplayer content into your lap.

I saw a post on r/ffxiv about OP's friends leaving FFXIV because of ARR.

Kinda tl;dr'd it, honestly.

My opinion after starting up a new account to play through ARR sidequests is:

The game's a glorified expansive singleplayer RPG.

I had this issue with PARALLEL playing the MSQ with my partner.
