Edmund continued strolling beside her.

“Did I ever tell you how I started dating my wife, Ms. Granger?”

“No, I don’t think you have.”

“Well is was quite the story. We both hated each other during our time at Hogwarts—or at least, she hated me,” he laughed.

Edmund continued.

“To Draco?”

“Yes.”

Edmund looked up and thought.

“Well, I don’t think so.”

They went another five minutes without speaking. Hermione broke the silence again.

“But my whole life he bullied me, and NOW he tells me that he is in love with me?”

Edmund shrugged.

“Love is quite funny, isn’t it?”

“I don’t want to talk to you, Draco,” she said sternly.

“Well it’s a good thing I’m not Draco, isn’t it?”

It was Edmund.

“May I join you?” he asked.

Hermione shrugged. “Sure.”

Neither of them spoke for a good five minutes. It was Hermione that broke the silence.

“Am I being too harsh?”

One day, about a week after their fight, Hermione decided to go on her walk, like she usually did. It was one of those chilly days at the end of March, where it had just rained a few days prior and you could smell the grass in the air.

She heard footsteps close behind her.

His words can out soft and low, but clear.

“I don’t think I could ever stop.”

Angry tears ran down her eyes as she turned on her heel to go upstairs to her room.

During the next few days, the house went have to being quiet and awkward.

They started walking separately again.

“All these years! You made my life hell! And to think, we could have been friends—or maybe even more—if you hadn’t—“

Hermione turned to him slowly, as a light seemed to go off in her head.

“Are you still in love with me?”

“So you spent every year in school tormenting me. Got it.”

“Yes, I know. And I was an arse for that—“

“And arse? No, Draco, you were a coward! The worst kind, at that!”

When she walked in, she barely noticed Winnie reading her book and Edmund reading the newspaper in the living room.

“Wow, you were going to take the fact that you we in love with a ‘mudblood’ to your grave. That makes me feel so much better!”

She didn’t even notice Winnie and Edmund wincing.

Suddenly, it was her who was now the fast one.

“Hermione, wait!”

She picked up her pace.

“Please listen to me! I’m sorry.”

…

“You were never supposed to know! This was something I was going to take to my grave!”

By this time, Hermione was able to reach the door of the house.

“How long, Draco?! How long have you been in love with me?! Tell me, now!”

Draco hung his head low. Burning red patches consuming each his cheeks.

“First year.”

“Bloody hell.”

Hermione turned to walk back home as Draco rushed to catch her.

She stomped towards him and faced him.

“You’re going to tell me what you meant by, ‘definitely far from it.’ Are you saying that you were—?”

She couldn’t even finish the sentence.

“Hermione, I—“

“How long?” she asked, her nose getting redder and tears welling up in her eyes.

“I—“

She was still smiling—still thinking that that he was still joking somehow.

“Oh come on, we can laugh about it now, Malfoy! You hated my bloody guts! No need to be coy.”

“Let’s just change the subject, Granger.”

Draco began walking ahead.

“No!” she protested, her voice now firm.

Like always, it was a lighthearted debate between the two of them.

“Yeah, I thought that you were an obnoxious ‘know-it-all,’ but I didn’t hate you, Granger. Definitely far from it.”

A Freudian slip that made Hermione stop in her tracks.

“What do you mean, ‘definitely far from it’?”

Edmund and Winnie obviously noticed—Edmund asking always asking them, “How’s the weather, you two?” with a cheeky grin.

It went well like this for a while. But all good things come to an end eventually, right?

“But you hated me,” Hermione joked. She was in the middle of one of their conversations.

Their first conversations were still awkward, but then they slowly turned into them reminiscing about Hogwarts, laughing about their old arguments, to talking about anything or nothing at all.

It got to a point where she looked forward to her walks with him.

“I mean, if you want to,” she added.

He paused, his eyes questioning what she said.

“Are you sure?” he asked.

“I mean, we don’t need to be strangers—we live together.”

She hated to admit it, but it was kind of cute to see him blush.

“Sure.”

And that became their thing.

As she made it to the bottom of the stairs, she heard Draco opening his door.

“Oh, sorry,” he said as he looked at her from the top of the stairs.

He was turning to go back in his room when Hermione stopped him.

“You can join me,” she said. It came out as if she had blurted it.

They still made it work though. Hermione kept her distance and he kept his.

It was a weird game they played, but it was their norm. Still, there was an awkwardness between them with words seeming to be left unsaid.

One day, Hermione but on her snow boots to go on her walk before work.

She limited her bathroom time (sort of). And she would time when he went on his walk or running, and give him the space to be uninterrupted.

This went on for a good few months, well into the winter.

Of course, things changed as the weather got colder. Less daylight meant less to walk before work.

In two weeks, he was back to running. The air in the home became lighter, too. Instead avoiding each other’s glances, they greeted each other with a smile. Sometimes, even a wave.

They respected each other’s space—at least Hermione started to. She no longer left the cap off of the tooth paste.

Draco nodded and Hermione raced out the door. It was a weird feeling—Draco being nice to her.

Maybe he was different.

Maybe the old him died, too.

It turned out that Draco’s knee wasn’t sprained or broken from the fall, just a bit bruised and sore. With a week, he was out walking again.

“You don’t have to forgive me, Granger. Not now, not ever. I just needed you to know that.”

A beat of silence lasted between them. It was probably to calmest conversation that she ever had with him in her life.

“Oh..well—I have to get to work,” she said. It was the only thing she could muster up.

“Besides,” he said, his face becoming more solemn, “I wouldn’t blame you if you did.”

“What?”

“I mean, I—Hermione, I’ve done some terrible things—to you, I mean. And I been meaning to say—well I’ve been meaning to say for a long time—that I am sorry, Hermione. Truly.”

“Oh. Well, I…uh—“

Draco was lying in his bed when she walked in. He was still in his hoodie and shorts and his knee was elevated on a pillow Winnie set up for him.

“Came to finish the job, Granger?”

“Draco, I—“

“I’m just kidding, Granger,” he smiled.

“Oh…okay.”
