Look none of this is difficult.

The billionaires want us to hate each other. They're buying every newspaper and social media company to flood the space with bots and hate speech to keep us fractured and divided. And we could do that - and tear each other apart - or we could try to fix things.

Actually, this is worth talking about.

Right-wing media has capitalized on inter generational conflict for years to get Boomers to hate young people and vote against anything that might help them. And now... they're convincing them that young people are terrorists and enemies of the state.

Talked to a few local Conservatives and they really do think that black clothes and piercings = antifa. This doesn't bode well given the recent rhetoric.

Some barista somewhere is going to get hurt.

There is no leader of Antifa.
There is no girlfriend of the leader of Antifa.

They are creating imaginary people so they can justify going after real people.

Summary:

Young people wearing dark clothes and trying to fight for a better future aren't new. These are classic punk kids. Most of them are just recycling fashion from the 80's and 90's.

What is new is the open bloodlust expressed by their parents.

Yeah I've thought about this as well. I did apply to work on medical disinfo once. Although I'd also be pretty happy to spend a few years working with a Green Corps or a Climate Corps someday.

This is happening because far-right billionaires have purchased every media company and have spent decades building an ideology around white supremacy and hate.

And they're doing this because... they don't believe democracy.

They already have near unlimited power. Democracy would limit that.

Except now... they're also trying to convince their base that young people are violent and terrorists and enemies of the state.

And this has been overwhelmingly effective because dipshits need an enemy to "fight" so that they can feel righteous in their cause.

All of these headlines are designed to convince older people that young people are WEIRD and FOOLISH and that their problems are their fault.

This absolves them of blame for current conditions and allows them to move on and feel better about doing nothing to fix them.

These kinds of inter generational wedges used to sound like:

"Millennials are killing the X industry" OR

"Millennials won't save and won't stop buying avocado toast" OR

"Something something litter boxes in schools!"

Mike Johnson: "We're so angry about it. I mean, I'm a very patient guy, but I've had it with these people. The theory we have right now -- they have a hate America rally that's scheduled for October 18 on the National Mall. It's the pro-Hamas wing and antifa people ... "

Yeah every time that happens I regret it. The brief initial frisson of "I've said something important!" is kinda nice, but ultimately meaningless

If I were a DC reporter, I’d consider maybe pressing Johnson on how he reconciles these two statements.

Mike Johnson: "People have got to stop framing simple policy disagreements in terms of existential threats to our democracy. You can't call the other side fascists and enemies of the state and not understand that there are some deranged people in our society who will take that as cues to act."
