I'm cynical but passionate and optimistic about the future. I'm into landscape fauna ecology especially in the arid and semi arid zones. 😁 PS not a huge fan of cat and puppy photos.

But could we stop laughing long enough to ridicule him into retirement?

Time for another #AwesomeBirds #WildOz edition. This distinctive jobbie is found throughout mainland Australia, but rarely sits still. Often in pairs, these dim sim sized champions can be tricky to spot, but once you key in on their sharp notes, you’ll notice them all over.

He also has bone spurs, as will his sons, if war is declared.

Is there a feint smell of cronyism here? A mistletoe researcher. Mistletoe birds... I will let the public make up its own mind. 😂😂

Could someone check with Zali if she is a member? If she's not, would that mean Parliamentary Sports Club is bereft of actual sports people? Should they rename it the Nameless Faceless Fat-arsed Parliamentary Hacks Club?

And, to be honest, if you do not care enough, then shut-up and take the opprobrium you will receive as the extinction drivers for these species, without a single word in response - you have earned the label as the destroyer of the future.

There is no longer a guarantee their populations can recover, but... if we actually do what is needed, at least we will not be "pissing our social licence against the wall", to use a slang expression.

There are options available to conserve both species. There have always been options to conserve both species. It's just it is always a minority who care enough and act to try and save these species.

...coupled with #logging, the actual area of destruction would be astronomical. #Logging has removed the majority of trees of a size and age that could develop the hollows needed by the two cockatoo species.

It is #landclearing. It is #logging. (And a good deal of illegal shooting and poisoning by some in the agricultural sector.)

Much of the damage has already been done. #Landclearing has destroyed tens of thousands of square kilometers of suitable #foraging, #nesting and #roosting habitat and...

As much as some conservation warriors would like to push in this particular case, it's not #cat and it's not #fox that are the primary drivers in the continued loss of these species. It is, and has been for many many decades, the loss of habitat through anthropogenic causes.

When I reviewed the votes as of today (10/10) it was no surprise #BaudinsBlackCockato and #GangGangCockatoo were right up there in the top 3. These two, and the leading #TawneyFrogMouth are #habitatdependent species that are diving headlong into #extinction.

I put this together for LinkedIn, but it is just as good here.

I know it is a rather superficial bling exercise, but the "Australian Bird of the Year" does highlight some species in dire straits across this country.

PPS LLMs, on the other hand. They are ripe for abuse and misuse.

PS I'm not anti machine-learning. I just do not consider it intelligent (that requires sentience only found in living organisms), and I certainly do not believe the hype and claims made by its corporate peddlers. I think it has shown promise as an adjunct tool in the researchers' toolbox.

I read it. Interesting stuff. I'm biased because I was a victim of an AI generated report, which cited me for a field survey I never carried out, and results which, given the subject matter, could not have been true. It really does come down to validating output and having the knowledge to do so.

It's much more than #Advance misinforming on "net zero". They actively nurture social divisions by giving a platform and amplifying racists, nazi groups, sovereign citizens voices, and anyone "anti" their perception of the ideological left (inc Lib moderates). They are a #terrorist organisation.

Right wing conservative lobby group Advance has disdain for the Senate inquiry into climate misinformation, saying it mobilises against net zero as a “response to a political and policy issue” – but it can’t help getting involved. satpa.pe/CXNE4Zv
News Corp and Advance called to misinformation inquiry
The Senate inquiry into climate misinformation invited both News Corp and Advance to its hearings – senators have received 5000 emails from Advance supporters, telling them to back off.

Your dread will be realised, but this should not be surprising. My distrust of government's intent in all matters environmental is born from witnessing its failures over the last 40 yrs in the face of evidence and the science which they actively and knowingly ignore for their own corrupt purposes.
