Get ready for #Pinktober 2025 with me! This year's theme is "Gone Too Soon: Animals Driven To Extinction By Man." You can follow along and draw each animal on this list, or you can pick your own! Just make sure you share your lovely drawings with me by using the hashtag #Pinktober2025 !
#Pinktober2025 Day 24: #RoundIslandBurrowingBoa
This burrowing #boa is a species of #snake that inhabited the island of #Mauritius in an extremely small range of forested habitat. It was heavily persecuted by early settlers and its habitat destroyed, and eventually went extinct in the late 1900s.
There were thousands to millions when #Polynesians settled, & went extinct due to overhunting by 1445, along with their only other predator, the Haast's #Eagle, which relied on them for food. This again demonstrates the delicate balance of island ecosystems & how badly humans can affect them. (2/2)
#Pinktiber2025 Day 23: #Moa
The Moa was a flightless #bird that inhabited the islands of #NewZealand
There were 9 different species of Moa that ranged from the size of a turkey to about 12ft tall. (1/2)
I'm all ready to go this weekend and @lugcon.bsky.social !
Come see me and support your local artists and small businesses!
#Pinktober2025 Day 22: #SicilianWolf
This was a small #wolf species with pale fur endemic to #Sicily that was the subject of many superstitions and was hunted to extinction in the 1900s. There is only one photograph in existence of a live specimen.
#Pinktober2025 Day 21: #StellersSeaCow
This relative of the #dugong was massive, growing up to 30ft in length, weighing up to 10t, & covered in a thick layer of blubber to survive frigid waters. It was hunted for its meat, fat, & hide, & went extinct in 1768, less than 30 years after its discovery.
For sure! And it gave hunters a run for their money too. They had to come up with diabolical methods to capture them. So sad they were wiped out. 😭
Recently finished a big batch commission for Masters Of Metal And Magic, and these are just a few of my favorite character and species designs for their game Ruined Sea! Go check them out at www.ruinedsea.com
#Pinktober2025 Day 20: #SeaMink
This was a large mink species that lived on the northern east coast of North America & was only described after it went extinct. It was aggressively hunted for its size (being the largest of the minks) & reddish fur & went extinct in the late 19th/early 20th century.
Today is my first day home after Multiverse Convention, but that's not stopping my flow!
I'll be at @lugcon.bsky.social this Thursday through Sunday, October 23rd-26th, 10-5 Thurs-Sat & 10-3 on Sun!
Come find me in the Exhibit Hall at booth B307, and yes, I will have Flint & Feather merch with me!
Thank you. I wanted to show the beauty and majesty of each creature while representing them in a way that conveys their imminent death, to drive home the idea that these were indeed devastating losses and we are responsible for them, as well as ensuring they don't happen again.
They've all been really devastating to learn about. 😭
It was the only #parrot indigenous to that area and one of only three species native to the US. They went extinct in the early 1900s, due to deforestation, hunting, and the pet trade. (2/2)
#Pinktober2025 Day 19: #CarolinaParakeet
The Carolina #Parakeet was a presumably poisonous bird that lived, as the name implies, in the Eastern, Midwest, and Plains areas of the US. (1/2)
#Pinktober2025 Day 18: #RatasIslandLizard
This small #lizard lived on #RatasIsland in #Spain. The island was demolished in the 1930s to allow large ships to enter the bay. This beautiful #reptile was declared extinct in 1950, another example of the fragility of island species.
#Pinktober2025 Day 17: #SteppeBison
This #bison lived during the mid #Pleistocene to #Holocene. While the exact cause of its extinction is still debated, the fact that it was hunted by #Neanderthal & modern human alike suggests that humans played a big role in wiping this megafauna from existence.
I'm all set up and ready to go at @multiversecon.bsky.social in the Dealers Hall! I'm straight in front of you when you come in the entrance- just look for the pink booth! Come support a great selection of talented local artists and authors this weekend. ❤️
It went extinct in the 15th century due to government culling and habitat destruction. (2/2)
#Pinktober2025 Day 16: #Hanyusuchus
Hanyusuchus is a #crocodilian from #China that was named for the poet and government official Han Yu, who, after numerous #crocodile attacks on humans and livestock, issued a proclamation demanding the crocodiles leave the area or be killed. (1/2)
#Pinktober2025 Day 15: #BarbaryLion
This #lion lived in the mountains & deserts of the #Maghreb of #NorthAfrica and were culturally significant in Nubian culture. They were a popular subject for hunting and were eradicated quickly with the introduction of firearms, going extinct in the early 1900s.
#Pinktober2025 Day 14: #TecopaPupfish
This little #fish resided in the #TecopaHotSprings and could survive in water temperatures up to 110°F. Because the #hotsprings were so attractive to humans, development of bathhouses in the area soon made the waters unlivable, & they went extinct in the 1970s.
#Pinktober2025 Day 13: #XercesBlueButterfly
Xerces Blue was a gossamer-winged #butterfly that lived in the coastal dunes of California. It is believed to be the first American butterfly to go extinct as a direct result of habitat loss caused by mankind. It was declared extinct in the early 1940s.
#Pinktober2025 Day 12: #DomedMauritiusGiantTortoise
This #gianttortoise species lived on the island of #Mauritius along with many other unique #animals that were exterminated when the Dutch arrived & slaughtered the #tortoises for food, fat, & oil. They were extinct on the island by the early 1700s.
