The words ‘seventeen’ and ‘seventy’ have similar lip patterns. Words with similar lip patterns are called #homophenes

Deaf lipreaders can misunderstand shop assistants. In this picture a lady learns in her receipt that the handbag in the sale was actually £50.00 & not £15.00.

Words such as ‘fifty’ & ‘fifteen’ have similar lip shapes. These are examples of #homophenes

French does have a few proverbs about lips, silence & speech that can be adapted beautifully for #LipreadingAwarenessWeek

“Les yeux sont le miroir de l’âme” (the eyes are the mirror of the soul)…just as lipreading uses the power of sight to access words.

The French proverb, “lire les lèvres, c’est entendre avec les yeux…” translates as “…to read lips is to hear with the eyes…”

I think this is a succinct representation of lipreader friendship.
