#EU law requires #GMO labeling when levels exceed 0.9% at the ingredient level.

Our study shows that duplex #sequencing can reliably detect #NGT genome-edited DNA down to 0.1%, suggesting a potential alternative detection approach when #PCR assay design is not feasible. 🧬🔎

In any case it's fascinating how cultural mixes can create amazing things 🙂

Sometimes my fellow citizens make fun of Italian Americans, who are so proud of their Italian roots despite being so different from Italians. But I love them because they have created a culture that is new and unique.

As far as I know, pizza was a kind of low-quality street food that was popular in Naples, but pizzerias were definitely invented in the US.

Thank you America for creating the right environment to make Italian creativity bloom! 😉

Archaeologists at Pompeii uncovered a fresco depicting a meal of a flat bread round covered in herbed cheese (called 'moretum'). That's right, a PROTO-PIZZA.

But modern pizza, as served from Tokyo to Rome itself, was probably invented in New York.

Let's talk about the "Pizza Effect".

Makes sense! I mostly refer to those people who own an old computer that can't be upgraded to Windows 11. It's a pity to throw away a working device to purchase a new one.. in those cases I would give Linux a try

My PC has been Linux for some years, I think it is great if your work is mainly office, browsing, gaming or programming.

Some distributions have modern and sleek interfaces with animations and everything (e.g. Ubuntu or Zorin OS). I recommend it to the average user, less bloatware, it just works 🙂

This #LochNessMonster photo is doing the rounds on social media, accompanied by a fake story about it being real, and new, and attached to a specific eyewitness event. I see people on Facebook groups thinking that the photo is the 'real deal', sigh. However... 1/n

Windows 10 support ends October 14th! 😱 Can't upgrade to #Windows11 and don't want to buy a new computer? No worries:
- Backup your files
- Download Ubuntu tinyurl.com/ubuntu24lts
- Flash it to USB stick with Balena Etcher
- Boot, install and get your apps from Software Center

A tweet from Tom Ellis about the lack of rules in biology:

"As I tell my undergrads, there are only 2 rules in biology:

Rule 1: If people think there is a rule, then somewhere out there an organism or virus will be breaking it.

Rule 2: The person who finds that gets a paper in Cell"

A fascinating article by @matthewcobb.bsky.social from the Asimov press archives, reminding us that there is no such thing as a "central dogma" in molecular biology.

It includes a brilliant thought experiment about how info could flow back into DNA (i.e. through environment-dependent gene editing)

Numbers that make you think: in the USA the #homicide rate is 10 times that of Italy.

In 2023, there were 334 homicides in #Italy and 19,800 in the #USA; when you do the math, that's 0.57 cases per 100,000 inhabitants versus 5.9. Impressive!

"We should insist on #AI that can collaborate with, say, doctors—as well as teachers, lawyers, building contractors, and many others—instead of AI that aims to automate them out of a job." 🤖

AI can be used to automate tasks—and entire jobs. But it could also be designed to collaborate with humans. David Autor and James Manyika on why we should focus on the latter:

Le nuove tecniche di editing genomico stanno rivoluzionando l'agricoltura, ma hanno creato un paradosso: mentre le modifiche genetiche diventano sempre più facili da implementare, i metodi per riconoscerle si scontrano con limiti tecnici apparentemente insormontabili. 🌾
