Sherrill, a congresswoman and former Navy helicopter pilot, defeated Republican Jack Ciattarelli, a former state legislator and small business owner.
Democrat Abigail Spanberger has won the election for Virginia governor, defeating incumbent Republican Lieutenant governor Winsome Earle-Sears.

Spanberger, a former member of Congress and CIA officer who ran as a centrist, will be the Virginia's first female governor.
