I spent the evening listening to his recent interviews. I was pretty sure I’d be going mad before the end of the night, but it’s actually a lot less painful than I expected.

Describing Bill C-27 as a "technical term that no one else but us will maybe get" is a hell of a good way to trivialize the role of law in society. Yea sure, laws are just technicalities that no one cares about.

Argh.

I kinda feel like the fact that Quebecers find the project laughable makes it less of a pressing issue for Anglo Canadian journalists? Perhaps even encourages them to ignore it because their criticisms could actually bolster support for the project?

What can academics do to help government shape policy?

“Put your work out there.” For regulators. For the public. It’s incredibly helpful.

Policy idea: jurisdictions that require platforms to maintain ad registries should also require them to ask civil society organizations if they want to host the data before deleting it.

Google has deleted its political ad archive for the EU, thus the last 7 years of ads, of political spending, of messaging, of targeting - on YouTube, on Search and for display ads for countless elections across 27 countries are gone

Inspired by a preventive dispute mechanism developed in the U.S. in the 70's to resolve tensions between the U.S. gov and large engineering companies working on military projects, @catherineregis.bsky.social and I have tried to imagine how states and platforms could collaborate on tech regulation.

Attends. Ce qui est amusant aussi, c’est qu’il avait besoin d’être briefé sur c-27. Ça ne donne pas l’impression de quelqu’un qui a une longue et vaste expérience du domaine…

You radicalize people by telling them working should be fun. And then they become ungovernable.

Well, now that it’s been discussed on @radiocanadainfo.bsky.social, maybe it can leave the realm of wild ideas and enter the world of ideas actually worth exploring?

Just to be clear, this is an alternative to the global trend of adopting laws that require people to either upload a picture of their ID or have an AI scan their face to guess whether or not they’re over a certain age. #S-209 #S-210

(3) Strengthen Canadian sovereignty and lead by example by showing the world that you can "protect the kids" without infringing on their human rights.

(2) Create financial incentives for parents to buy the "BlackBerry for Kids"--subsidize the company so it can offer the cheapest phone on the market, and provide tax breaks or tax refunds to parents who purchase it, etc.

And here’s a wild take: it should start with a rights-preserving online age-assurance strategy that goes like this:

(1) Invest in RIM to create a "BlackBerry for Kids".

*it made Its way*

But this typo reveals something even more exciting! Not only did the game reach Canada, it also reached French Canada, where people are a little less familiar with the ins and outs of running a platform because of language barriers!
