#5debutalbums8084 Altered Images - Happy Birthday (1981) The tweely distinctive vocal style of Claire Grogan works beautifully over the band's sparse post punk. Steve Severin produced a surprisingly moody album that has really stood the test of time. I'm thoroughly enjoying this run out. 🎂 #MusicSky

#5debutalbums8084 Josef K - The Only Fun In Town (1981) with Paul Haig. If contemporaries Orange Juice were full of zest, Josef K were full of literate bile. Dance music for standing still to. A handful of records gives scant evidence of their influence. Best track - Crazy To Exist #MusicSky

#5debutalbums8084 The Danse Society - Seduction (1982) Occupying the Venn diagram sweet spot between Public Image and The Banshees. The early gothy tunes evoke grey modern landscapes and greyer relationships. Seriously atmospheric mood music. #MusicSky

I had no idea that Au Pairs, in some form, were touring. Thanks - I will check it out.

#albumoftheday #5debutalbums8084 Au Pairs - Playing With A Different Sex (1981) An unflinching examination of gender roles & governmental overreach that is, sadly, even more relevant today than in '81. This is a stunning record that the band never quite matched. Best track - It's Obvious #MusicSky

#5debutalbums8084 @remhq.bsky.social R.E.M - Murmur (1983) Full length debut may be over 40 years old but could have been recorded in 1966 or yesterday. Enigmatic and cryptic lyrics coupled with traditional yet fresh sounding guitars made for a "right band at the right time" scenario. Ace. #MusicSky

#NowPlaying Burial - Comafields/Imaginary Festival (2025) Thanks to @hyperdub.bsky.social who replaced a missing copy, no quibbles. This music is extraordinary. Spooky, soundtracky, pulsing, crackly, hairs-on-the-back-of-your-necky and too short at 10 mins. You need Burial in your life. Trust me!

#5debutalbums8084 The Glove - Blue Sunshine (1983) Does this qualify? Hmm, not sure. As if Robert Smith and Steve Severin weren't busy enough in the early 80s, they released this one-off side project of varied but eccentric psychedelic pop. One for the completists, but it has its moments. #MusicSky

Staging post for British soldiers in the Napoleonic war I believe.

I don't have that 7", but managed to pick up Country Girl Became Drugs And Sex Punk and Love On The Terraces over the years.

I lived in Jubilee Road, Fratton for a few years but grew up in Waterlooville. Still have loads of relatives in the area.

I do wonder how many people are playing these obscure gems at any one time.

#5debutalbums8084 Serious Drinking - The Revolution Starts At Closing Time (1983) Cut from the same cloth as The Higsons and Peel favourites if I recall. I've not played this terrace infused Ska punk for decades. If Viz comic was a band this is what they'd sound like. #MusicSky

I'm a Pompey lad and must admit I had no idea about those nights.

#5debutalbums8084 The Passage - Pindrop (1980) A 1st play for Dick Witt's debut for many years. Early 80's brooding keyboards jostle with distant, almost dislocated vocals marking this out as an interesting if not riveting listen. The vibe is "Soundtrack for Nosferatu" Best track - Carnal #MusicSky

#5debutalbums8084 The Chords - So Far Away (1980) Sounding eerily like Strange Town era Jam, this band, along with Purple Hearts, were the best of the mod revivalists. Solid, catchy songs and not a Lambretta in sight. #MusicSky

#5debutalbums8084 #albumoftheday The Chameleons - Script Of The Bridge (1983) Long at 57 mins, but flashes by on a wave of glistening, icy guitars. Burgess tackles the big issues (sadly, all still relevant) with a passionate and human touch. Massive sound. Best track - Don't Fall #MusicSky

Yeah, dude was 😎. He liked even weirder music than me.

I must seek that one out. I used to be in a band with a Colin Harris.

I think you might be out on a limb on that one Mark. 😄

#5debutalbums8084 Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Welcome To The Pleasuredome (1984) Audacious debut double featuring a string of dance pop hits that captured the apocalyptic and diverse zeitgeist perfectly. Crystal clear production. The Power Of Love has proved timeless. #ZTT #MusicSky
