I thought I might make a pinned thread of my threads here (some of which are effectively photo albums) starting with this long Introductory thread:

Hi everyone!

I'm Fergus Murray. I'm a science person, writer of nonfiction, and #Autistic community organiser (Chair of @amasedin.bsky.social). Also #ADHD, but I often just say I'm monotropic.

I'm here to post and learn more about #neurodiversity, politics, science, language and other things.

Related dog detail (on other side).
It's another paw, with claws just visible, but it looks a bit like a Muppet head or something?

I was about to say 'oh good, she's deleted it' but then I realised, no she's blocked me and/or you for pointing it out

Huge explosions were seen as Israeli air attacks hit a town in south Lebanon, killing at least one person and injuring at least seven others.

The strikes targeted a site that sold excavators and other heavy machinery.

Yes, it's an extremely heated issue, and people's reasons for being wary of Your Party in that context are very well-documented.

Really?

23,460 km doesn't seem that close!

You were arguing with 'no support for trans people' from Your Party. People explained why they'd say that.

You're waiting for... What, a different explanation?

They're very much official Green policy, too, for whatever that's worth.

I think he finally said something about trans rights again a couple of weeks ago, didn't he?

I still maintain our best defense against fascism is a healthy educated population. Truly fix Universal Health care and make education free at all levels. UBI is the thing to build on.

It would certainly be easier from one side, but would it be feasible from anywhere?

Deimos is in a pretty high orbit around Mars, so I'm not ruling it out without doing calculations, but my guess is no.

The next question is: if they succeeded in trampolining off of Deimos, would they just end up plummeting down to Mars?
fergus.oolong.co.uk
I reckon anyone could throw one into orbit. Getting it all the way out of the gravity well would take a bit of strength and skill.
fergus.oolong.co.uk
It would take a bit of practice, though.
fergus.oolong.co.uk
They could probably do it with a trampoline.

Deimos, the smaller of Mars's moons, is slightly bigger than Cardiff, and has an average escape velocity of around 5.7m/s: a little over 20km/h.

This is low enough that an athlete could jump off into space if they got a running start - but they couldn't, because the gravity's too low for good grip.

And thank you for sharing that about the Isle of Portland (Dorset).

I had no idea!

"A 'kimberlin' is a resident or residents who haven't been 'Portland-born and bred'; 'grockles' are tourists and visitors and 'quiddle' is a squid or a West country term of 'sitting and talking aimlessly'."
