And I cannot recommend a lifeline enough. Fishline is great, or something long, skinny, and bendy (fiber works, but can get slightly caught on your yarn sometimes).
This way, if you mess up, you don’t have to unravel everything, just to the line.

Honestly paper clips work too. The rubber ones are a little easier, but that might be just me.

Have you considered trying crochet?

I know a lot of crafters who try one and end up liking the other better (I’m a knit>crochet person myself).

Otherwise, I can’t recommend stitch markers and lifelines enough, when you are tackling a struggling pattern.

Okay that last technique looks amazing !!!!!

What seems to be the thing that makes you mess up?
Timing, the strands, or the tension?

Did you go down a size or two of needle from the Wooblez pattern?
Thinner yarn likes a thinner needle

What sort of yarn fiber are you using?

Tiny hack, grab a piece of string/waste yarn, wrap it around your head, and mark/knot where the overlap is.

Then measure that against either a ruler, tape measure (solid or bendy), or known sized object, like a piece of legal paper.

It’s not low profile, but Akko makes gorgeous keyboards, both in design & satisfying tap feedback.

Final parts of Lola Crow’s 2025 SAL Extraordinary Birds
Cross-stitch project in a plastic green frame: a soft blue/white dyed ah-ee-da fabric, covered in cross-stitch birds, a blue-footed booby, a shoebill, a flying macaw, the edges of a teal/black aviary, other small birds, and the work-in-progress of a large prehistoric duck dinosaur
