Great photos! That yellow cap is incredible, I saw a few females at the end of August in SE Michigan and was blown away by the brilliance of the colors. Your pics turned out much better than mine 😁

I love how distinct the supercilium is on this bewick’s - this is a good angle to really appreciate it!

The white supercilium flows so seamlessly into the beak, really cool to see.

I grew up with coyotes around, so I don’t mind them much. Wishing the best for the two that I saw!

A juvenile Cooper’s hawk was camped out on the front lawn with a fresh kill and a parent watching, before bringing the meal to a telephone pole to clean + eat. Gnarly!

Thank you Bill!! I had a sore neck for weeks trying to spot them beforehand 😅 I suspect it was a recent mayfly hatch that had all the birds hanging out lower than usual. Hope that your luck changes soon and you can get a clean shot!

It was a treat seeing red-eyed vireos noisily feeding in the lower cedar branches in the evenings - they can be so hard to spot in the forest during the day!

Red-eyed vireo gazing down at us. I really enjoyed how many critter visitors we had, even if it took some time to find them in the trees. The winds died down and the sun came out, and while we were cooking dinner over a fire down by the water the red-eyed vireos passed overhead. They expertly picked through the cedar, spruce, and birch trees for food, singing all the while.

Lake George Trail - the loop ended up being really enjoyable, with lots of dips and rises along the path. The water overruns in some spots, leeching along the path and turning the soil black and loamy. The smell on the air was pristine, deep, and at times jarring - it smelled alive. The drone of the insects - how could I forget? The mosquitos covering every inch of exposed skin the moment you stop moving… It’s as different from the high desert as I can imagine.

Channel between West and East Graham Lakes, from the trail. I’ve kayaked under before, they’re great rec lakes - the panfishing is fun, too.
