Lambert’s mission was a success. After leading the Chinese 5th Army to safety,he was summoned to Chongqing. There, this unsung hero of the retreat was personally awarded the equivalent of the Distinguished Service Order by Chiang Kai-shek. Pic here in Kohima in the 90s w/ 1 of his former secretaries

Desperation led to chaos. Lambert had to manage starving, ill-disciplined troops who were looting villages and even fighting each other. He prevented an on-the-spot execution and negotiated with local headmen to avert further conflict. #ForgottenWar #WW2History

Air supply in a monsoon was revolutionary in 1942. Lambert’s (pic here in later life) rescue relied on airdrops of rice, bully beef, and even cash. But it wasn't easy: supplies were lost in the jungle, and one bundle of 5,000 rupees bounced off a cliff! #ForgottenWar #MilitaryLogistics #RAF
