I perceive the effect of the religious ratchet, where the obsessive enthusiasts who dominate any religion opt always for the most strict interpretation in any discussion of the meaning of sacred texts. See 'thou shalt not cook the kid in it's mother's milk', and the outcome: two dishwashers.

I recall a Lab MP interviewed yonks ago saying something like - 'We always have mid-term protest votes, we just ignore them'. Northern, back bench, salt-of-the-earth type.

I think an attitude which contributed to the Brexit vote.

I caught a flight from Aberdeen, Scotland, once. I saw the sun set from the terminal. The plane took off, the sun re-appeared, then I watched a second sunset.

Jill, this Brit worked 12 years for a US company, for and alongside US engineers and techies. Good people, shared their skills & experience, taught me much about the work. They deserve better than we see happening. Dawn will come after this long night.

This Brit has worked for and alongside ordinary Americans and knows them to be sensible and decent humans, so would not judge them on this. The big businesses which backed him though: no way do I want to see them in my country. I avoid the names already here when shopping. How else can I protest?
