If you only watch 1 video from me let it be this 10 minute magnum opus on city building: youtu.be/nQys8W8JyOs
The title "City Builder History". On the left is the cover art for SimCity (1989). On the right is a girl using a machine that looks like a typewriter who is also in black and white. In the background is a modern skyline of skyscrapers.

I swear if HoMM3 released today people would say it looked like a 'mobile game'.

Does anyone like realistic simulator games? Here's a bunch to play and notable upcoming ones: youtu.be/bPcPVHhJpJY
The title 'Big Real Sims'. In the foreground a set of hands hold an axe ready to chop a tree. On the left is a tree with the sun shining through a forest behind. On the right is a modern looking house.

Today: "DLC sucks! Old games didn't have this crap"

Meanwhile HoMM3 a quarter of a century ago: 2 expansions within the first year of release, a 'complete' edition 1 year later that wasn't actually complete, 8 level packs with 4 sold individually...

Well that is my whole ethos haha! It's possible and often nice to do, but it's easy to trip when you glance back.

I have some experience of HoMM but I was an Age of Wonders player personally. This definitely vibes like a modern HoMM3 though, which is the classic favourite.

Btw I ask these questions here because the people who say things like this, never reply. I just want to understand...

Some people are literally telling me "these aren't simulation games, they're management sims"...

Do they... not realise what 'sim' means?
gamerzakh.com
Aha! That one tends to lead to a ban.

I do really appreciate suggestions when it comes to how to do things better, but if I give reasons on how the suggestion isn't going to work, the appropriate response is to consider those reasons. Not... call me 'defensive', 'hostile', and/or 'stubborn'. Especially when I've already tried it before.

I've been working on some animated pixel art myself, have a look at some behind the scenes with this public video: www.patreon.com/posts/how-i-...

You can follow on Patreon to keep up with the public posts btw, no need to pay anything.

I don't have any solid plans right now but it's always on the table. I just can't keep up with all the games releasing these days.

Want to know the best city builder of the year, every year, since the 1960s!? I got you: youtu.be/uafFU0-Svs4
The title "1960s - Now", behind the frame is split down the middle. On the left a pixelly screenshot from SimCity 2000. On the right a futuristic city with a space ship launching straight up into space and another planet.

Happy birthday to Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom! Turning 23 years old today. You were the end of an era.
A screenshot from the video game Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom. It shows a detailed and intricate city developed to high levels of housing and resources.

Bonus, they also said EVERY Civ game is "childish and poorly designed". When I asked them for ANY game they like, they refused to answer and began lying about what they said.

These people will literally rather lie, next to evidence of the contrary, than say something positive.

Some people will tell you this or that game is 'bad' but when you ask them "which ones are good then?", they genuinely reply with... "none".

They just don't enjoy that genre but still feel the need to go around telling everyone "everything sucks".
A user on YouTube asking "what would be a good city builder to you then if manor lords is mediocre? Genuinely i'm a newbie to city builders" and the reply is "They all leave some itch unscratched, tbh. Really struggling to think of one."

Yes but it was difficult and harrowing for everyone involved.

Shoutout to those who have been subbed since 1970.

When I give myself the reputation of saying "every game is a copy" I have to keep going back until I can't anymore aha
gamerzakh.com
In my latest video I hint at the true origins of video games, North American original cultures and games like Zohn Ahl by the Kiowa. Every game is a copy but I don't think we can know what inspired this. I found a video from an expert who explains how this game works: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TQs...
A modern recreation of Zohn Ahl on a wooden block with colourful patterns along with a red and a yellow peg inserted into 2 spaces. A diagram of Zohn Ahl, a board game by the Kiowa of North America. In the middle it says "ahl stone". On the left and right are "dry branch". On the top and bottom are "creek". Numbers are on all edges of the board with black circles indicating peg spots for where the players pegs will land.

In my recent video I added some extra signs to SimCity 2000's depiction of London. What else could you have missed? Better rewatch the whole thing from start to finish: youtu.be/nQys8W8JyOs
A colourful screenshot from SimCity 2000 showing the city of London recreated in-game. Across the city are various signs denoting famous landmarks such as Hyde Park, St James's Park, and Regent's Park. Around these locations have new signs added for where Malaysian restaurants are located. Normah's, Med Salleh Kopitiam, Gopal's Corner, Bonda, Putera Puteri, Satay House, Laksamania, Laxsa Soho, Rasa Sayang, and Bumbu Maria have signs added to the city.
