Catbuses have entered the real world too: exhibitions have featured life-size Catbus models, including the permanent exhibit at the Ghibli Park. The park is home to the Catbus Room, a play area for kids, and it introduced a fleet of rideable electric Catbuses in 2024. [9/9]

As such a recognisable representation of the company, Catbus merchandise is popular, and advertising has featured its image too. For example, Miyazaki made a TV ad for the Ghibli Museum - later updated for the Ghibli Park - showing various characters riding a long Cat Train. [8/9]

Catbus fits into a transport theme in Ghibli works. Like Catbus, the train in Spirited Away (千と千尋の神隠し) takes Chihiro between fantastical settings, and a normal train in Whisper of the Heart (耳をすませば) kicks off Shizuku's adventure. And then there's Miyazaki's well-documented love of planes! [7/9]

Catbus is friendly, but also pretty fearsome. Old supplementary materials indicate that he is a bakeneko, a shapeshifting cat of Japanese folklore. While other bakeneko in the Totoro world were intrigued by trains, it was the sight of a bus that inspired Catbus to transform. [6/9]

During a production meeting with Takahata and Suzuki Toshio, Miyazaki apparently suggested that he wanted to scrap the more surreal elements like Catbus. But when Takahata said it would be a shame to drop those ideas, Miyazaki changed his mind and stuck with it. [5/9]

While the idea for My Neighbour Totoro originated much earlier, Catbus didn't enter the scene until the film was being planned. At the same time, Takahata Isao was working on Grave of the Fireflies (火垂るの墓), which reportedly made Miyazaki want his own film to be more literary. [4/9]

Catbus is not the only one of his kind. In the Ghibli Museum short Mei and the Kittenbus (めいとこねこバス), Mei meets a small Catbus-like creature shortly after the events of the original film. It takes her on another ride, where she witnesses cat transport of many shapes and sizes. [3/9]

As the name suggests, Catbus is a giant cat that functions as a bus. He first appears when Satsuki and Mei are waiting for their father's bus: Totoro waits with them, then boards Catbus and leaves. He shows up again later, giving Satsuki and Mei a ride to visit their mother. [2/9]
