No this is wrong. Policy is not politics. Most people are barely paying attention and what they want is to feel like things are mostly fair and their lives a little better. It doesn’t matter to them if taxing billionaires is the precise mechanism that makes their lives better.

Yeah I think this piece is a good treatment. There have been other takes that boil down to ‘yes the left was mostly right on billionaires but they weren’t right for these precise hair splitting reasons so it was fine we treated them with scorn.’ Which no, they were right and we should say it.

I’m hard pressed to observe the American public of 2025 and think they would understand or care about such a distinction. It’s a messaging not a substantive issue for most people.
