Difficulty has been too farmed as some weird pride/exclusion thing rather than looking at it as a tool that drives engagement with the systems of a game. Games can be too hard for no reason in the way that sometimes prose in a book can be unnecessary obtuse, but difficult prose can be NECESSARY.

People will yell about accessibility, but accessibility is a braille translation, not a book rewritten as if it was a simple english wikipedia entry. Sometimes the friction is needed to appreciate the art, and sometimes you have to build your fluency up to appreciate something. That's just culture!!

I'll have people be like "Well as a dev, if you want the game to be 7/10 hard for everyone, you need difficulty options", but what if you don't care if its 7/10 for everyone! What if your concern is that all the mechanics, themes, and vibes properly interface together??
