Even the artists who say reference is cheating have eyes and look at the world. They could not draw a Kangaroo for example without ever looking at one, they may not use the reference while drawing, but they must have looked at it at some point. And feeding from that memory while they draw.

Once you can do it using the ref try to draw it from memory and boom once you can do that you can draw this thing without reference ;3
Eventually you have internalized so many things and forms that you can mix them all together to create something new and unique if that's what you're after.

Don't be afraid to even trace over stuff to learn how things relate to eachother at first if you really struggle with a specific thing. Then if you think you can make sense of the traced lines, try to draw using that traced art as reference.

Or even better by directly drawing some of it even. They say to truly see something you try to draw it, and i would say that's true. You notice soo much more compared to just looking at something.

This is also the same thing where this "visual library" idea comes from. First you need to fill this library with the stuff you want to ideally recreate in your own way. Either by looking at a big amount of drawings or pictures of the thing you want to draw.

And think of it like, how do you expect to draw something if you don't know how it looks like in the first place? As an artist you essentially draw how you see the world, but how do you want to draw how you see it without looking?

And the realization that almost everyone does this, art teachers like Vilppu or Steve Huston do it in their sketchbooks, they study from life and pictures to figure out how certain poses or body parts work. Even the old masters like Da Vinci did. But seems like you already got that part :3

I struggled with this so bad too for the same reason.
It was a bit of a slow process but Glenn Vilppu helped me a lot to overcome this with his saying "There are no rules, just tools", that's something i really took to heart.
