#RunningPunks, meet @jrdarchivist.bsky.social, the author of the definitive, heavily illustrated history of punk fanzines in DC, Keep Your Ear to the Ground, new from @georgetownup.bsky.social, acquired by Hope LeGro! Today’s 🎧: “California Paradise” by the Runaways #BookSky @aupresses.bsky.social
I am holding the exciting brand new history of DC punk by John R Davis, Keep Your Ear to the Ground, large format paperback with tons of full-color photos, published by Georgetown University Press. Cover design is red and black text on a white background, just like my Dead Kennedys T-shirt (not in this photo but I should have worn it). Next to it is a view of the ocean from my run.

Love the Stone Roses! I think I need to start a new playlist.

#RunningPunks, I finally ran the #BerlinMarathon on 9/21/25 after a 4-week hiatus recovering from shin splints. Barely made it under the cutoff, but I did! Lots of punk music along the course. Berlin Wall Memorial, East Side Gallery, highly recommend. share.google/RYDk30xTbZmb...
Me waving early in the race when I was still running and before I began pouring water over my head at every stop. It was hot! Brandenburg Gate BMW Berlin Marathon medal on floral dress background. My fourth world major; 16th marathon but first since 2018; slowest ever. Favorite Tshirt citing: Anti Fascist Running Club

I can’t wait to hear about the Loch Ness race! I had registered in 2019 but then my aunt threw a 90th birthday fete for herself, so I didn’t get to do it. I deferred to 2020 but…

Oh, I meant sunrise, sorry. I wish I could get up that early!

Hi Dick,
My thoughts on Garmin’s use of “anaerobic”: They don’t adjust their 220-minus-age formula for older runners like us who are fitter than our average demographic. I run-walk slowly, no racing this year, low heart rate, and it says I’m in the a-zone, so it suggests it. My theory anyway.😊

Thank you for such beautiful, inspiring photo collages! That is quite a sunset!

Love Metallica. Just realized I left them off my favorite playlist by accident.

Okay, Dr. Pete, what’s the race? I’m sorry I forgot. By the way, you’re the second person through whom I’ve encountered this volume of “innits.” The only reason I know what it means, as an American, is that I read Martin Amis’s dystopic novel London Fields 35 years ago! Do you know it?

I will check it out! I thought I knew all the punk until I met this group. I guess I’m just stuck in the past. Happy birthday to you! Birthday runs are the best. My first half marathon was on my 45th birthday. Then I ran a 50k on my 50th birthday, just so I would remember it, lol.

Beautiful! How do you record that, is it a GoPro or something?

Sunday long run just before dark, taking procrastination to new heights. Finally had some energy. 🎧 Santana, Doors, Iron Butterfly, Byrds, Yardbirds, Animals, and we can’t forget the Electric Prunes! #RunningPunks #RunSoCal Reward: steak and Bordeaux.
Lone tree with foggy ocean horizon.

Trekz Air by Aftershokz bone-conducting. You’ll never lose an earbud again, and you can hear outside noise for safety, which means you can usually wear them during races that discourage earbuds unless there is an outright ban (like USATF races).

Get well soon! And thanks for the Terminator post because the theme for Marathon du Medoc next year is 80s, and I’ve been trying to convince my husband to go as the character.

Today’s run has to be called Dusty Trails in honor of the duo and their eponymous 2000 album. #RunningPunks Slow run-walk but longest run so far since 2018, the last year I ran a marathon. Today’s victory was recovering from a trip while crossing a road. Looked like Charlie Chaplin on roller skates.
Dusty ankles after 14 miles on dusty trails. Pacific Ocean on background. Dusty Trails album cover, released in 2000. It’s not punk, more like the carefree Euro lounge that was popular just before 9/11. Panorama of ocean as seen from trail. Malibu in the distance. Me again.

Note the name of the shoe. Airtox. With 86% of Danes speaking fluent English, you’d think someone might have made the association with “toxic,” but maybe tox means something special in Danish? Reminds me of the Chevy Nova, which did not do well in Latin American countries—“doesn’t go.” (No offense.)

Meandering early morning 11-miler to Nyhavn (New Harbor—only 400 years old), Copenhagen. No song today to symbolize the fact that Trekz headphones lost power midrun.😊 #RunningPunks

Congratulations!! Assuming this was an official marathon?

I’m becoming envious of your deep squats—that’s impressive hip flexor flexibility! Always a struggle for me.😊 After 16 years of racing, I’ve decided that is one of the key factors in speed.

Humid sweaty swamp run before the Academy of Management conference in Copenhagen. There is a punk song about “the Danes.” If you know the artist, remind me in the comments.😊 #RunningPunks. Saw these deer on the trail—they had to run along it because the brush was too thick for them to cross.
Two deer on a bike path in Copenhagen, sort of a road to nowhere in the middle of nondescript fields. Will find a better route tomorrow.

My calves hurt more if I forget to drink water or if I’ve been sitting at my desk for 12 hours, or if there is a slight hill. Those are my three guesses.

Four-mile run/walk through the neighborhood trying not to think about so many things. Today’s song is one of my all-time favorites: Paranoid by Black Sabbath. RIP Ozzy. Funny thing though, I heard a double-time punk version years before I discovered the slower original. #RunningPunks
Another overcast cool summer day in Southern California with the ocean in the distance and a sliver of sunlight at the horizon.
