Congress is back from recess, which means your lawmakers are back at work voting on bills that affect you 🫵

The SAVE Act is one of those bills: which proposes to require proof of citizenship (such as a birth certificate or passport) to register to vote.

1️⃣Spread the word - tell everyone you know in California they now have a statewide ballot measure on November 4, 2025
2️⃣ If you’re in California, show up and vote. Register to vote by October 20 (or in person on Election Day too!)

So today, we celebrate 60 years of the Voting Rights Act and support the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which would restore and expand the protections we love from the original Voting Rights Act.

The goal is that everyone has equal access to voting, but in reality we’re not there. Since a Supreme Court case in 2013 weakened the VRA, we’ve seen hundreds (no, literally, hundreds) of new state voting rules that make it harder to vote.

If you’ve ever used a ballot drop box, voted in an accessible polling place, or registered to vote at your college address – you did all of that thanks to the VRA!
headcountorg.bsky.social
Have you ever seen voting resources in other languages? That is also thanks to the VRA! Participation in our democracy expanded to people who aren’t native English speakers.

In the years following the passage of the law, the gap between Black and white voters narrowed. More voices lead to more representation, and by 1971, there were 14 Black members of Congress.

Today, you don’t have to pay poll taxes or take literacy tests in order to register to vote. Equal access to voter registration = more voices heard.

The Voting Rights Act was passed in 1965, a bill that was essential to the Civil Rights Era. To put it most simply: it secured the right to vote for all Americans regardless of race or ethnicity.
