It's really the only way he can document the truth, to write a secret journal. He knew he couldn't outright challenge the Party, and he also knew what he was being told wasn't accurate. He had to start by convincing himself and use the journal to reset his own thinking each day.
Yes, I think it is a book worth reading. It is stark, disturbing, and important.

Everyone did a great job describing it! It twists people into knots, not knowing what is true true any more. It creates a false 'truth' that shapes their reality into exactly what the Party wants, even if the actual day to day reality they experience doesn't align at all with what they are told.

I want more people to care that SNAP benefits are being cut off on November 1. 40% of SNAP beneficiaries are children. This is callous and vile.
I believe it was concept only, to push the narrative they wanted and maintain control.
Other responses described the tech well. I think he ultimately saw the dangers in how tech could be used to control people. While it isn't used in the exact manner described in the book, it has the capabilities and his warning to us through this book is to not let it happen. Can we stop it?

But, liars will always find ways to make their lie true for people who get lazy and don't want to do the work to get to the truth. The adage 'you can't always believe what you read' is an important warning.
I think it is possible, but more difficult now then it was when the book was written, due to the ability to share things via multiple types of communication channels. And, the ability to save items in various ways. The internet creates a large worldwide network that would be hard to manage.
