I love old buildings too. It's like you can feel the history, almost see the past.

In the 16th century, Näcken was known to wear too much fanciful make-up and was often seen at the same time as God sent strange heavenly bodies across the sky, like comets.

In the 17th century this was not folklore. It was dead serious. Literally.
The church and the local village courts were involved, as were the supreme courts, and people were executed.
helenerwin.bsky.social
3/7In the 18th century the Swedish legal system and the scientific community spent time investigating cases where Näcken was told to have caused all kinds of havoc, strange sudden deaths, or broken engagements.
helenerwin.bsky.social
2/7 In the 19th century, encountering Näcken was a frightening thought and women sewed in a piece of steel in their clothing to protect themselves from him. Even a steel hairpin could protect you. Näcken was known to pull you into the river and drown you.

Folklore changes with the times, evolving through the centuries. In Sweden in modern times we might joke that someone who plays irresistible music must have a bit of Näcken in him.

1/3 It was just a little locket. Näcken found it in the river. There was a little portrait in it, but it floated away. He brought the locket home to his wife.
It was a mistake.
