A massive thread of resources, history, information, and material to help you not only fight and understand book censorship but protect the incredible democratic institutions of public libraries and public education.

This is updated regularly!

dude, i've been quietly, uh, mentally spiraling about this.

OKAY so I'm still chewing this over. Back when we all had phones in our house, a kid could pick up the phone and dial it.

Now, in order for my kid to make a phone call outside of an emergency, she needs to know a password to open either my phone or my husband's.

So many steps.

In order to ban books from its libraries, New Braunfels Independent School District has just closed its libraries to middle and high schoolers.

Students are *banned from the school library* so officials can go ban books.

This is EXACTLY what advocates warned.

At the bottom of the piece are action steps you can take. Among them? Sharing and signing a petition created by high schoolers who are furious that their favorite event is being impacted by bans like this with no explanation.

Eight books have been banned from an optional state-wide Reading Bowl in Georgia–an event meant to encourage young people to read. The steering committee pulled those titles with no reason, including a title about....the impact of book bans.

Why ban books when you can ban the entire library?

New Braunfels ISD has frozen library purchase orders & closed secondary campus libraries following a harassment campaign by Libs of Tik Tok & other out of district extremists.

It's sad that these folks do not have enough people in their real lives to get them the help they need.

Either this action won’t face any public criticism or correction from the state (this is more likely to happen if the district leans conservative), or the state’s narrative will be to blame a few “political actors” that are deliberately denying students access to score political points.

The thing I've been fixated with lately is all of the messaging around not wearing makeup and being "naturally beautiful," and how many hundreds of dollars folks then spend on skincare to attempt to achieve *that* goal. It's exchanging where the consumerism goes. It's still $$$ either way.

Has your library banned Banned Books Week events/displays this year? I want to hear about it. I had thought I'd get 2-3 responses but, y'all, we're at over 20 at this point.

All anonymous. It will be used for a story in the near future. Survey closes 10/17.

This week, a panel just advanced this bill. There are some concessions–libraries can "only" be sued for $500, not $50,000, for example–but the meat is the same.

You know, so you can act. Don't sit back on it, *esp* if you're in Wyoming.

This summer, I wrote about a potential bill coming up in Wyoming that would absolutely devastate libraries statewide and would create some of the most restrictions on what could or couldn't be available for minors. Yes, there's also a "parents can sue" portion...

The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl–an optional state-wide competition intended to get kids excited about reading–has banned 8 books from its teen competition this year.

Among the banned books? @samiraahmed.bsky.social's book about banned books.

What the hell is going on?
