“We do as best we can to do as good we can.”

It’s hard to be the person you want to be all the time.

Don’t stop trying.

He very much instilled the belief that our lives were more important than worrying about getting in trouble, so if we did something that most kids would expect to get into trouble for (like getting wasted at a party), we could ask for help without question.

What’s ONE green flag about your father?

Just so you all know, the proper usage is actually “quote … end quote” not “quote … unquote.”

I just saw a thing about how it sounds like Barack Obama is singing Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl) and the song is now ruined for me forever 🤣

How can you make it through anything and find your way out of the darkness if you’re not the author of your own story?

I’ll (unconventionally) jump to the oft misquoted Robert Frost here, and say “The best way out is always through.” When the choices are maintaining the love and finding small joys or letting life happen to you, it does’t seem like a choice to me.

Point being, cherish your friends. The best ones are few and far between.

won’t devolve into stubbornness and “I’m right and you’re wrong.” In fact, she actually helps me clarify my viewpoint instead of making me want to throw my hands up and say “fuck it” because the conversations are full of knowledge and done in good faith.

One thing I love about @marshmaloaf.bsky.social is that we can have a difference of opinion and respect each other for it. I’m able to have conversations with her openly on social media that I wouldn’t have with anyone else because I can trust they

I think this helped me pinpoint what bothers me about it. It’s that to me, it feels like it requires we define ourselves by our pain and endurance, and even if that’s in how we overcome it, it’s a really bleak and reductive view to me.

lol I misread this and thought “goodnight beanbags” was going to be part of your legacy and was irrationally pleased about it.

Also, thank you. ❤️ This is the longest philosophical conversation I have had outside of a classroom since I was a pre-teen/teen discussing it with family, and it’s nice to have a good faith convo. Despite some learning since then, I know my views are still colored by those early lectures/convos.

comes across as you are failing at life if you’re not inspirational in your suffering.
hollychristine.bsky.social
I suppose I would say there is no difference between systemic/collective misery and personal suffering. If we hold them apart we depersonalize the situation and deprive those suffering of their humanity. Each of them is suffering. Sure, it’s better to try to make best of what you have, but to me it

of the lower half of my body. The idea that this would be the perfect human is actually kind of disgusting to me. There’s nothing wrong with not being perfect. If life is supposed to be constantly self-overcoming, then life should always be learning and growth.

I have mixed feelings on the Übermensch. I think morality should just be based on treating each other well, like you would want done for you. But I don’t think anyone needs to be told to find joy in the struggle of life. There’s nothing enjoyable about not being able to feel a significant percentage

The idea of accepting suffering as necessary for growth. That seems like such a coping mechanism for his own suffering. In reality, people are suffering the world over and they just suffer and die. There is no benefit to it.

But I also understand that I’m coming at this from a much different perspective than most people.

I grew up in a household that was more Nietzsche and Rand than Western religion. As a person who, like Nietzsche, has had migraines my entire life and has dealt with chronic pain and illness since my early 20s, I find it hard to find validity in his world view.
hollychristine.bsky.social
I’m still 100% in on “Nietzsche was a dick” though. 😆

I feel I should clarify that one of the things I handled was the offboarding of employees.

Woke up from a nap with a migraine and realized that since I got two vaccines today, I’m in for a couple days of misery. Ugh! I still have more vaccines to go.

I fucking love eggplant. It is so underrated.

I didn’t know but it doesn’t surprise me. It seems generous to think in the ‘80s we casually dropped the word “mujahideen” and expected all Americans to understand who was being discussed instead of centering the U.S. as saviors.
