📙 Bluesky is the only platform where I haven’t circulated my book, as I’d recently joined and was waiting for the physical copy. So here it is (last book post, I promise) 📙

I've written something new on British factory tours of the 1920s and 30s and their presentation of mass production as a social good academic.oup.com/tcbh/article...

OUP's new AI editorial assistant will help in the 'assessment' of manuscripts, apparently. This strikes me as a very bad idea. Peer review is something academics do for free as a service to their discipline, and last time I checked 'Alchemist Review' is not my scholarly peer.

Today from the Terry's of York company archive - this rather lovely sketch of the grand staircase for the main administrative block of the factory at Bishopthorpe Road. Built in 1924 it was supposedly modelled on the famous staircase on the RMS Titanic and also boasted a similar glass dome above.
pencil sketch of a grand staircase sweeping up to a central point with two further staircases leading off to the left and right. A woman is walking down the stairs carrying papers and against the back wall there are several portraits hanging and a central clock. The staircase rails are art deco in design.

We've stuck a mini-display about some Boots stores around the world in West Bridgford Library, if you happen to be passing.

Morning bluesky. After years of avoiding evil X, I'm looking forward to reconnecting.
