Seoul is where I grew up in and spent most of my life, a sleepless megacity where traditions and technology coexist.

My latest from here (and probably last for a while!) on travel trips, what to eat & where to go as part of Reuters City Memo series. ☺️

The gleeful doxing of someone cheating in public is bad even if they are a CEO and even if they are a Coldplay fan. It's bad because this kind of thing is happening to random people on TikTok for such crimes as "sitting silently on a plane" or "being attractive"

Facial recognition and crowdsourced social media investigations are constantly being used not just on cringe CEOs, but on random people who are simply existing in public.

Hyuk and Seok debuted as members of K-pop group 1VERSE (universe) today after escaping North Korea and training for years to chase their K-pop dreams. 🇰🇵

Hyuk resorted to stealing food & eating spoiled rice back in the North. He’s now a K-Pop star. 🎤🕺

Do you like K-beauty? South Korean cosmetics brands are eyeing the US market to cash in on booming demand despite Trump's tariffs.

Olive young will launch a store in LA this year and Tirtir will sell at Ulta Beauty stores starting this summer. Here's my latest 💄

K-beauty startups bet booming US demand outlasts tariff pain
Emboldened by roaring online success in the U.S., South Korea's cosmetic startups are expanding their bricks-and-mortar presence in the world's biggest consumer market, confident their mass appeal will offset the hit from tariffs.

By far my favorite part of South Korean elections: election night graphics. SBS television station kills it EVERY. TIME. They play these clips all night and they get more and more unhinged and creative as the night goes on.
Lee led his party to a landslide general election victory in 2024 which means his presidency would come with the Democratic Party commanding a super majority of 171 seats in the 300-strong parliament
South Korea's President-elect Lee Jae-myung:

was a child laborer
lost the last election by less than 1%
survived a knife attack
live-streamed his rush to parliament during martial law
wins election with the biggest vote share since 2012

Liberal candidate Lee Jae-myung projected to become South Korea's next president, according to MBC-KBS-SBS exit polls.

Multiple polls showing Lee winning over 50% of the vote, a huge lead if they are right.

In South Korean presidential elections, you have two full days (6 am to 6pm) of early voting and polls open until 8pm on Election Day which is a national holiday.

So that you can take part in democracy without having to wait for hours or rush to the polls after work 🗳️

In South Korea and many other democracies, a political gender war is intensifying among Gen Z voters, with young men voting heavily for right-wing parties and young women leaning left — a departure from the days when both genders tended to vote mainly for progressives.
A record-breaking 8.7% early voting turnout in South Korea (as of noon) despite election fraud allegations pushed by the president who declared martial law & his loyal supporters.

Daegu, a conservative PPP stronghold, has the lowest turnout so far.

By my count, reductions in US troops in Korea occur every 13-15 years. We are currently in, or maybe even past, that window. This need not be a big deal IF it were handled and messaged the right way. The Trump administration will certainly not handle it or message it the right way.
