It is clear that discretion is key. Work should, and can, lead to human flourishing. But – in a world spending billions on advancing AI – to do this we need to be investing not just in technical capabilities, but in human ones too.

Technology is having divergent impacts on wellbeing. While digital information and communication technologies can correlate with an improved quality of life, more advanced newer tech tends to correlate with reduced wellbeing. This has significant implications for policy, regulation, and practice.
Does technology use impact UK workers’ quality of life? - IFOW

However, our research also showed that new technologies can enable greater autonomy and flexibility at work, improving overall wellbeing for many workers. What we know is workers must be actively engaged in processes of technology adoption to successfully manage risks and impacts.

But how should this newly freed-up time be used? Unmanaged, time savings do not guarantee productivity gains or improved worker wellbeing. How do we ensure that adopting new technologies does not lead to work intensification or reduced autonomy for workers?

Oliver responded to a BBC report published today that explores the transformational impacts of new technologies across workplaces. The report looks at how @lgtnhs.bsky.social uses a robot to dispense medicines which are then administered by clinicians, augmenting rather than fully automating work.
