Xena is so fascinating and iconic precisely because she reflects real everyday women who are messy, unconquerable spirits; who gain hard-earned wisdom through their mistakes & regrets. To only imagine those women through sexual violence is itself just sexual violence writ on culture

😂 it’s type 2 fun as they call it! Terrible in the moment, funny as a story. I found it fascinating, in its own terrible way. An anthropological study in the sins of patriarchal writing. It’s easier to enjoy as a failed product; if they’d gotten funded it would be too painful to look.

I read the whole thing and it does not get better; another terrible part is where they decide to skip all of the Gabrielle x Xena falling into their loving relationship with a time-skip montage, as if their relationship wasn’t one of the key interesting parts of their story 🤪

Oh it really is. It feels awkwardly clear from this script that the writer is into the visible degradation of women for audience titillation, that somebody wanted to take Xena down a peg by attributing her life’s achievements and mistakes to a man in order to cast her as just “misled” 🤢

NGL reading it DID have me think about what would make a Xena reboot fun. I have my notes. The world definitely needs more dom women lead characters on our screen; but we've suffered enough reboots.

The straights sharing this in my feed have just been weird about it and flattening the story to the absolute barest minimum engagement with it

I tracked down and read the script. Truly, we were saved from a soulless monstrosity. More of that action please

Gosh northsky looks interesting, but more viscerally puts that clear emphasis on the “global north” that has me wishing I knew enough of another language to join non-western social media.
I’ll listen to your reccs tho, do have a lot culturally in common with Canada so it’s still worthwhile

The ethics of longevity, huh. Sometimes I gotta admit it’s hard to grapple with the idea that the best way to live is to leave no footprints, when I am so often in love with the ghosts and echoes left behind by human lives.

Obviously, sustainability should be a key factor in public art made to deteriorate…

It brought to my mind the dragon topiary my nana maintained for over a decade next to the letterbox of her flats. Sadly (though predictably) it deteriorated fast when she finally stopped maintenance.

Spotted it again on the way home. The last of the pink has finally bleached from it. Still with an iron grip to that fence, monochrome Elmo smiles upon the world.
Will we soon see him stripped down to his skeleton? Does he have robotics inside? Should this mascot be replaced with another?

May we have the resilience in all weathers of the Elmo toy that’s been stuck on the fence of the Belgrave/Lilydale line near Camberwell for over 15 years.

It’s funny how glasses change personal image! Like a major haircut or style change, framing and shape recontextualise the shapes of the face. Apparently research shows the majority of people’s perceptions of faces “stop” at the glasses too.

What style did you get? :) How’d you pick?

Out in Ballan today, gonna head up to Daylesford. It is always interesting seeing these up close. Turbines are pretty sleek in their final form even if the process to get there is anything but

Felt a tiny bit like a human on Sunday, just managing things around fatigue. I know summer is going to be a killer but I do really miss it right now
