Maybe I’ll give more detailed thoughts on this if y’all want, but I think blueberry is actually so fascinating with guys specifically due to how it relates to masculinity. I feel it’s more pronounced with straight men but there are some interesting twists with queer folk too

Please keep in mind this is based off my experience as a queer man who’s struggled with masculinity for years. Not all masculinity is toxic, but the worst parts rear their head most frequently in our culture. It’s sad, but we can overcome it. (51/?)

It’s easy to just write that off as only the doing of cishet chuds, but I reject such a simple answer. Again, we are shaped by the society we live in. Everyone has to unlearn their harmful prejudices, and unfortunately some take longer than others. (50/?)

In addition to all the other stuff, we need to mention the male gaze. Our society doesn’t view men as objects of desire, and attempts to that end are usually met with revulsion from (straight) men. Imagine becoming a blueberry and having to reconcile with a new sexuality. (43/?)

And yeah, all this stuff is bad, but I do think that’s what makes berrying guys so interesting. It feels taboo because of how contrary this situation runs to all typical standards of masculinity. The man is turned into an object of ridicule: soft, harmless, exposed. (42/?)

Men built this system, of course…women and other marginalized people arguably get it worse in so many other ways. But it’s very notable that even the designated “in-group” is negatively affected by this way of thinking. Not even the dominant group is safe. (41/?)

I’m absolutely not here to say “men have it harder,” but there are definitely much less socially-acceptable means of expression. Look how limited men’s fashion is, how emotionally closed off they can be…dozens of cruel, inhumane standards that men hold themselves to. (40/?)

Humiliation is also an element that needs to be discussed. Shame comes from acting or even existing outside of acceptable social norms. If you break one of these rules, no matter how arbitrary, you get punished…sometimes from others, sometimes self-inflicted. (39/?)

I do wonder whether this is more based off trauma or radical self-acceptance. Being societally Othered and even treated as less than human makes it easier to accept such a dehumanizing situation, albeit in a safe and controlled environment. Reject humanity, become fruit! (38/?)

On the flip side of the coin, I think why so many queer folk embrace this kink is because it is an explicit rejection of this framing. So many LGBT people have been excluded from traditional gender roles that this ridiculous transformation almost feels like a reclamation. (37/?)

Masculinity (much like whiteness) is primarily defined by the absence of certain “undesirable” traits. You can perform all you like, but if you possess any of those traits you risk being excluded. Anything not deemed masculine is feminine: anything feminine is disparaged. (36/?)

In a way, blueberries truly feel like a parody of masculinity. You’re bigger, louder, and command everyone’s attention. All that becomes a moot point when you deal with the reality of your situation. You have become a distinct Other now, an outsider to the all-boys club. (35/?)
