His hearing came back first, and abruptly. The first sound to fill his ears was an unfamiliar shout from above. It reminded him of a naval officer fresh from the academy, loud and stringent and clear as a bell. And yelling at him for some crime, of course.
“—you now, you despicable dryfoot! Justice will be served to…!” By the end, the declaration took on a quizzical tone. “...night?”
As Mondo blinked in confusion, his vision at last adjusted. He was greeted by another set of eyes, big and round and glowing faintly red. They were prettier than any rubies the pirate had ever seen.
