In the same breath, we recognize that Hamas has indicated it will only return four of the 28 bodies of deceased hostages today and remain committed to seeing all of them returned to Israel so that their families can properly mourn and find closure.

We applaud President Trump and his administration for their hard work in bringing this historic moment to fruition and encourage them to stay focused on the road ahead. We particularly commend the Hostages and Missing Families Forum on their tireless efforts to be reunited with their loved ones.

We are filled with joy following the return of the 20 living hostages to the arms of their families in Israel after two agonizing years in Hamas’ captivity. After relentlessly fighting to bring them home, Israelis can finally begin to exhale and embark on the process of healing as a nation.

With President Trump’s 20-point plan to end the war gaining momentum, we are eagerly hoping that the coming days see the return of those in captivity and an end to the horror of the past two years.

In an era where the Jewish people faces so much uncertainty both in the Diaspora and in Israel, today we pause to remember the horror and the lives we lost, reaffirm our urgent call to bring the hostages home, and renew our commitment to pursuing a better future for Israelis and Palestinians alike.

For many Jews around the world, the immediate and traumatic aftermath of October 7 has gradually transformed into a new reality in which our safety and well-being can no longer be taken for granted, no matter where in the world we live. 48 hostages continue to languish in Hamas captivity.

This day tangibly altered the lives of every Israeli as routine life screeched to a halt, gathering in bomb shelters became the norm, large swaths of the country evacuated their homes, society mobilized to support those impacted, and reservists left their families behind to defend the country.

Two years ago today, our world shattered. In its October 7 terror attack, Hamas carried out senseless atrocities against innocent Israelis on a scale previously unimaginable: murdering 1,200, capturing 251, and injuring thousands more.

We wish the Jewish community in the U.S., Israel, and around the world a meaningful Yom Kippur and an easy fast.

If Trump’s plan to end the Gaza war is carried out, it can solve the biggest regional crisis of a generation. But the hardest part—getting each actor to overcome internal politics and follow through—lies ahead, Michael Koplow writes in this Koplow Column. israelpolicyforum.org/2025/09/30/w...
Well Done Is Better Than Well Said
Trump presented his 20-point peace plan as a fait accompli. But even if Hamas signs on, the hard part comes next, which is fitting the square peg of what is committed into the round hole of what domes...
