Definitely not the first blog post inspired by a @monkchips.com comment, and won't be the last.

Monkchips is the sand in my oyster that makes beautiful pearls. 🦪😆💕

(Still mean to circle back to the question of what it means to have good technical taste...)

It’s really not. It’s about the same cost for that size tank including live plants and fish. Lego might be easier to clean but not no-maintenance either

The best thing about AI as a pairing partner: it's like a slow dev I can guide but I can disappear for hours in meetings or go for a swim and it's just patiently waiting there, with all the context, ready to continue when I am.

Solves the "what was I doing?" problem

Occasionally I do a deep dive of thinking about whether AI will really fundamentally eliminate the need for software engineers and my conclusion remains the same: it won't. Might change the employment curve in some ways but barring the big singularity or w/e I don't see it removing the job

I made something! Monomarks.at is an open social bookmarking tool along the lines of Pinboard or Delicious, and it's based on ATProto, because I was inspired by @danabra.mov's widely-read post. Log in with your Bluesky account to save bookmarks and browse links posted by the people you follow. 😎

Yeah, I was invoking DHH’s term more for effect.

Honestly, I think of it more like an ecosystem: the detritus that spin off publicly from larger companies go on to feed the smaller fry. We’re definitely the bottom feeders enjoying the excess food from bigger fish

I’m also eyeing up the 33.3km Ultraswims (swum over 4 days) but not quite crazy enough today to click the button

I debate with myself whether Podia would still exist if Shopify didn’t. Maybe the open source “gifts” aren’t as apparent as Basecamp’s but I think it has contributed more to keeping the Rails ecosystem alive. Considerably more than similarly successful companies (Stripe, Intercom, Hubspot)

This year I did 3.5km, 3.9km, 3.9km (the Gaelforce Trilogy) and 5km races which at the time I entered felt like a real stretch but as the year went on felt well within my comfort zone.

Next year I'm contemplating 12km, 3.9km, 8km (the trilogy again), and 5km. Do I really want to do this? 😰

NVIDIA and OpenAi:

Concerns that their “increasingly complex and interconnected web of business transactions is artificially propping up the trillion-dollar AI boom.“

Which reminds me of my favourite hope for the future: no nursing homes playing soft classical music.

No, no, no. For us it’ll be Iron Maiden (Hallowed by thy name?), Skid Row (18 and life?), Bon Jovi (Living on a Prayer?), and Metallica (Enter Sandman).

Ain’t going quietly! 🤘

It attracted a certain demographic in the 40-60yo range because this music is imprinted on our souls.

Nothing will prepare you for a crowd of late-career-lawyers-and-dentists shouting “Fuck you I won’t do as you tell me” to Rage against the Machine’s ‘Killing in the name’ played by an orchestra

We saw The Rock Orchestra at the weekend: a fun reimagining of rock/metal hits played with instruments not usually associated with such music

We never needed while loops. The power was always within us.

Why? What would Nicolas Cage do about it?

which they have but yeah, that would be my assumption

Yeah, I love Zed as a former Sublime user than never quite gelled with VS Code. Though I need to find/make a solution for “run the test related to this file” and a few other bits I use often like “copy permalink and selection as markdown”

tbf I think there’s zero market for a paid editor that would satisfy a VC payoff so the rug pull will likely come elsewhere (what can you sell through an editor)

We've watched a few episodes and I thought it wasn't bad. Noticed the occasional leprechaun-costuming though. If anything, it's just a bit overly dramatic but as foreign-productions-set-in-Ireland go, this is far from the worst
