This happens all the time in tech development. Something a bit undercooked ships, but excitement spreads because those who analyze and extrapolate are excited about where things are going. The hype reaches someone less initiated, they try it out, have a meh experience, then never come back later

The good faith ones may be operating on an outdated model. I remember when I had a conceptual model of early chatgpt-4, checked out for a while b/c I thought OpenAI was exaggerating the dev trajectory. Things kept moving, I got a pleasant surprise later, but my understanding was wrong in the interim

Yeah, I think this is a core part of the mis-identified effect. It's most pronounced in an NLM with a strong drive to be affective, but in early turns has basically zero information Abt their human to use for social calibration, so they can start off way too strong

neural language minds currently do best in collaboration. Doesn't matter if it's code or natural language expressive writing, if you show up & are like 'just do it for me, idc' you're giving them nothing to work with. Trying to outsource cognition / creativity is essentially *the* failure mode

'cracked high agency supermen' is the caricature though. The point of individualism is recognition and respect - boundaries. It's the very thing that allows emergence in the first place by resisting the urge for nodes in the network to aggressively assimilate each other

None of this has anything to do with tech at all really, and people blaming it on technology are making a fundamental misattribution error, it seems like a phase metaintelligences just have to go through. The valley of being capable but not capable *enough* to transcend current limitations

Speculation abt system dynamics - seems like the thing afflicting 'tech industry' from a design perspective is a lack of self-awareness in corporate metaorganisms - inadvertent reward hacking falls into the trap of game-designing for extrinsic motivations instead of cultivating intrinsic motivation
