This is one of those pinned introductory posts. I'm Jim. I am a computer scientist by education, and a Unix/Linux system administrator by profession. My better half is Kat and we've been together 20 years as of Dec 2024. The adorable calico cat in my user icon is Lemmy.
They say heroes save lived. 18 year old Kimber Mills, may she rest in peace, is definitely a hero. It was not by any direct action that she saved lives, but due to a donation of her organs, she has the potential to save several lives. www.wvtm13.com/article/frie...

I got my copy of the dead tree version sitting in my TBR pile on my desk. In the last couple months I had far too much time, and a pretty good Internet connection, so my TBR pile has greatly grown.
I have 5 of his books and have read them all. All are indeed excellent. In addition to the 3 "& Steel" books I also have his book on Monte Cassino and the book on Montgomery and Rommel. He was working on a WWI book that I suggested should be called "Mud & Steel". I think that is a good title.
Funny enough, it was junior high or high school where I started reading everything I could get my hands on about WWII. That hasn't stopped to some degree. Although because I don't have enough to read, I've recently expanded into reading about WWI.
I have read his book, "Escape From Colditz", several times as well as any other book about Colditz that I could get my hands on. I also liked the British show starring David McCallum. They referenced some of the real escape attempts.
I want some Hell yes cheese!
It's officially October 1st so that means you all have to repost Assorted cheese

That is one very handsome cat. My Talia looked very similar. I had her for 17 years. She didn't growl so much, but she would make this chirping noise if birds were outside.
I'm not ready to give the full story, but I will say this, if you are not signed up as an organ donor, I implore you to consider it. I won't judge you if you don't, but please consider it. If you are signed up then good for you.
Hello Bluesky. I wonder how many of you noticed that I have been absent from here for a few months. There is a damn good reason for is and someday I might even give details. For now I will say I had a serious medical condition, potentially fatal, but I now have a new lease on life. (cont'd)
Damn good advice. Although I do try to do what makes both of us happy.
Why would you want to do that, especially if any of the dogs are on it with you?
That shipping from Canada is rough! No matter, happy wedding, you sold a book. :)
I am losing my damn mind. As part of reading an ARC of a book, I promised to give a fair review of the book. It's a standard deal, here's an free early copy, read it and tell us what you think. I had it in my mind that I never did so. Went to do it tonight and I see I did so on 30 May.
Congratulations. I was going to give you a wedding present by finally posting a review of your book to Amazon, but I see I already did so on May 30. I have no recollection of doing so. So instead, I'm going to ask, is there a way one could buy a signed copy of your paperback?
No. Just no. I do not want to pee on something that will be so happy to serve me. If that AI us trained to hold your junk, it is going to do much more than just hold it, if you know what I mean.
Sounds deluxe indeed. If signed copies are available, especially personalized, (I'm simple, "To Jim" is enough.) I'll buy a copy. My signed book collection is very modest (like a 1930s nun at a beach modest) so adding to the collection would be nice.
Very cool. Congrats on 20 years of Billy Boyle. What makes the deluxe edition deluxe?
Good to find a new home for stuff. I think I reached the age where finding a new home for stuff is as pleasurable as getting new stuff, maybe more.
Cool. We'll watch it when it gets released.
I finished book 37 which was “Did You Say Chicks?!”, a short story collection edited by Esther Friesner. This is the second short story collection following “Chicks in Chainmail”.

I finished book 36 which was Andre Norton’s, “The Forerunner Factor”. This is omnibus book containing 2 of her books, “Forerunner” and “Forerunner: The Second Venture”.

My first thought when watching the video was, "Gee, when I was a cadet in the Civil Air Patrol some 35 years ago, we marched a hell of a lot better than that. Heck, I taught drill a lot better than that. However, if on purpose, then we'll done Army, we'll done indeed.
This is from today's military parade. I was going to comment on how much better I and my fellow cadets marched when we were in the Civil Air Patrol 30+ years ago. They are so sloppy and entirely out of step. After reading the comments, that might all been on purpose and if so, well done Army.
I did not edit this, this is the actual parade with the actual music being played.

CINEMATIC
I finished book 35 which was Matt Dinniman’s, “The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook”. This is the 3rd book in the Dungeon Crawling Carl series. Carl and his now sentient cat Princess Donut explore the dungeon built after Earth is destroyed.

It really is hard to tell the satire from reality these days.
