It's like being dropped into this world where you don't quite understand the language yet and it takes a bit to sort it out. So now that we're fully engaged, there had better be a sequel so we can find out what happens next OR a prequel to describe what happened before "Blackwicket"!!

The blurb doesn't begin to describe the detailed world-building in this story - with rich history, classes of magical abilities, realms of magical worlds, family lineages and alliances, and more.

So many words to describe this amazing book: immersive, creative, atmospheric, gothic, magical, romantic... and I could go on.

That's probably the whole point, but it was mind-boggling.

So keep reading, because it all starts to make sense as Randall undercovers what's happening at the lodge and what role he will have to play.

What he finds at the lodge is creepy, sad, and disturbing.

I won't spoil anything that's not in the blurb, but will say that I found the beginning of the book a little hard to follow. I couldn't discern what were dreams, hallucinations, or supernatural events.

During World War II, Frances and Michael (the titular Guest Children) are sent to live with their aunt and uncle who own a lodge in Canada.

But after the war ends, relatives haven't heard anything about the children and Randall is hired to look for them.

This was an unusual horror story dealing with grief, memories, secrets, and (of course) ghosts.

And why does his sister not want her in Bell House?

Gorgeous Bell House, a family she didn't know, and Savannah itself are all enticing to Emily.

But why did her father change her given name? And what's in her grandmother's craft room and why does it keep calling to her?

And what was her father researching before his death?

For all of its haunted houses, rich history, beautiful scenery, hospitality... and of course, Bonaventure Cemetery.

After Emily's historian father dies in an accident, she leaves Wales to live with her only living relations in Savannah, GA.

This book reads like a witchy love letter to Savannah, GA - one of the most magical places I've ever visited.

So Thea struggles with what she wants to be: nurturing mother, loving wife OR powerful villain AND what she wants for her daughter. Maybe she SHOULD let her eat if she wants.

Original, darkly funny, heartbreaking, and horrific, and marvelous!

But Thea is more scared of her mother, a narcissistic energy vampire who made Thea's childhood miserable with her string of live-in boyfriends.

Because of this, Thea's always loved the female villains as they were powerful, conniving, brilliant, and gorgeous.

Yes, Thea's third child at three months old wants to eat all the time, kills a chicken, and bites her brother, and Thea is scared her child will hurt them all.

A brilliant social horror story that's so much more than that.

Although it's not always easy to read and yes, it's very violent, I didn't want to skip any of this memorable book.

Granted it was gory and horrific but some people claimed to have very beautiful spiritual discoveries.

So what led to the night of violence? Why did the people from the "Who's There," a website for those who wanted to break the show, decide to put plans into action?

As an audience member, there were only three rules: stay quiet, keep your mask on, and don't touch the performers.

"Come Knocking" was designed to be a spectacle where every audience member has a different experience.

Piper tells the extraordinary story of Avery Wallace who has to be accompanied by her mother every second as something will kill her if she's alone.

The more Piper finds out about Avery and her haunting affliction, she writes about it on a blog, thinking it's anonymous and noone will read it.

A young researcher wants to investigate viral ghost phenomenon from the 1990's and 2000's when home computers and the Internet were becoming common. He interviews Piper Lowry about her experience with a young girl she met while working in the public library.

Spooky books are my favorite and I read them all year long and this one about a haunted middle school girl grabbed my interest.

It was so creepy with an unforgettable ending!
