100% agree. But, I also have a love of trashy Z-grade cinema, so I'm usually willing to jump into anything that looks okay. I'll admit there are far more disappointments, but the rare gem makes up for a lot.
I didn't know anything about it, or who he was. Just thought it might be interesting. By the time it was done I realized it was a new all time fave 🙃
Hey, per our chat @acidkeg.bsky.social
Thing is, I just can't seem to escape my juvenile inclinations 🤪
Misfit, 10"x12" oil on panel 2023 (sold)
From a group show a couple years back.
I've always felt Charlie had issues.

Totally agree. And that's been like a little cloud hanging over me for a while. I still love a good mix and match and clever turn, but have become so much more aware of it, especially in recent years. I have to say, just chatting about it like this has been good. I sincerely appreciate it!
I don't miss that at all from the days of mostly doing illustration work. When I was young and eager, I took on anything and thought myself as being a sort of visual handyman. I felt it was good on the job training. But I quit taking work in other styles long ago. Don't enjoy it like I did.
OH, btw!! I'm open to any and all opinions on all this.
deep talk and rando analysis 😂
This has been something that's been swirling my brain drain for a while now, and why not get it out? The result I think will be more focus on my own path, free of pop culture litter.

Okay, done now 🤪
what I feel like I should strive for going forward. Being compared to AI doesn't make me happy. And as much as I love all this pop culture detritus, maybe peppering my stuff with it really isn't what I want to do anymore, and besides, it's really been done to death. Sorry for the -
is filled with that in art, music and literature, right? Inspiration pulled to try something new in a similar style? No defense for AI here (I hate it), but technically I see the point. It seems a very grey area. But these conversations lately have really made me reconsider my position and -
And one old friend compared what I'm doing to his use of AI for making prints. He prompts up pop culture stuff in the AI machine and makes gel prints of the return. I suppose I understand in a way. To him, I'm just a meatbag doing the same thing, compiling reference into something new. But history -
Love it!
I've always liked the whole lowbrow popsurreal thing and have admired so many of the artists that hit on this stuff, so it's a great pleasure to sprinkle it in when I can. BUT....it's been getting me thinking again about what I'm doing and why.
I've had some talks with friends recently...
And every time I'm putting ideas together, I think "I could do this or that!", you know, a series. But then, everytime I do one like this, I feel like I get over it. I had a whole list of goofy ideas with Ratfinks, but tossed em all, satisfied I got it out.
Cahtharsis of some goofy sort I guess.
Right?! I love 'em and the other groovy variations from that period, and always wanted to reference them somewhere. Same with Ratfink, and other monster, hotrod and weirdo things from when I was young. I touched on the Ratfink stuff in a painting last year. It sort of scratches an itch, you know?

This one is based on the short film: Premonition Following an Evil Deed (1995). It was David Lynch's contribution to the anthology film Lumière, but stands as a VERY Lynchian film, and it's only one minute long!
Premonition, 9.75x13.75 oil on panel.
This painting is for the upcoming David Lynch tribute show: Fish In The Percolator, at Spring Arts Gallery in The Last Bookstore DTLA, and curated by @artbythecreep.bsky.social
The opening is Oct. 12, 4-7:30 pm

One of my favorite quotes, and i don’t know who it’s attributed to, is:
“I know life seems hard, and it feels like a dark cloud of doom is hanging over us, but the most important thing to remember, and to derive hope from, is that Jerry Garcia is still deceased.”
You had me at social media sucks. I fully agree with your assessment.
