I visited Brighton for a week recently. People I saw brought up politics a few times and it was always inane social media spectacles. Counter with something important and they nervously change the subject.

Doctors are constantly finding new applications for medical technology.

Spain has invested in more modern water catchment and management infrastructure than England which probably helps.

The fruiting cycle of some plants can be disrupted if they're subjected to daylight during night. It throws their clocks off.

That is true and it was also true before the last election. Which isn't to say you're wrong but I have hope.

I'm not sure stunts like that will make much of a difference in the long run. The diaffected churn out/refuse to enlist, the true believers stay and sign up. In a few years you have a military loyal to the dictator.

If Trump isn't stopped he'll eventually have the military he wants.

Correction his name was not "August" before he became Augustus Caesar it was Gaius Octavius.

I think this administration if left unchecked will eventually transform the military into one that is willing to shoot civilians in the streets. It normally takes years and the change is already underway.

If I recall correctly the first thing August did before he became Augustus Caesar was take control of the military payroll.
joseggarcia.bsky.social
That is already slowly happening, generals being replaced, non MAGA soldiers not re enlisting and Trump sympathizers enlisting and re enlisting. In a few years it will be a very different military.

I think they are inept at governing. They're clearly good at politics.

Back in 2016 the threat of Trump was described as akin to a termite infestation whose damage wouldn't necessarily be immediately apparent but have long term consequences.

It’s this multiple times a day
They don't even bother to lie badly anymore.
I suppose that's the final humiliation.

Thank you for taking the time to clarify that for me.

I share your concerns.

What's quite striking is that there are a lot of issues which MAGA types are breaking with Trump on.

4% is great, better than I would hope for given what's transpired over the past few years.

You give them too much credit. Bond villains have more class than this lot does.

I can't imagine Zorn would be caught dead in the same room as Musk.

One of the lessons of history is if an autocrat is relying on the military to supress political dissent they better make sure the soldiers get paid.

I lived there for 17 years and I remember it in it's raucous cool Britannia heyday. It's not the same place anymore. Queens Road and St James Street were mute and devoid of life on Friday night.

There seems to be a flood of people down from London who are remote/hybrid workers. The crappy transport options don't matter so much when you're mostly working from home.

I don't think anyone understands what happens when these assets collapse in value.

One good sign is that it won't come as a surprise. The bad crashes tend to come as a surprising shock.

I was disappointed when I visited Brighton recently to learn that all the traditional curry takeaways had vanished.

I'm told they're still about in other parts of Britain, but not in places I'm likely to visit.

Novartis is laying off thousands in the US and expanding their European workforce. Part of a larger trend in the life sciences.

One striking thing that hit me when I visited Brighton was the amount of far right memes coming out of mouths I didn't expect to utter them.

Nvidia is serving as a backstop, giving its customers the cash they need to keep the lights on. I am referring specifically to their recently announced deal to finance OpenAI to the tune of 100 billion.

I don't understand what this means but it seems extremely weird to me.
