It is with great sadness that we heard of the death of Alex Wheatle. Booked as our Keynote Speaker in 2024 but health prevented that, and we can’t now get a hoped for second chance to hear an inspirational, outstanding author and speaker. He leaves a wonderful legacy of work.

A wonderful obituary for Jane Ogborn in The Guardian today. We will be putting something up
on @engmediacentre.bsky.social website soon, to recognise her extraordinary contribution to EMC, to English as a subject, and to the teaching of it. www.theguardian.com/education/20...

This is worth a re-post I think. Very important message - much more so than endless arguments about rows being better (A tiny research study in a special school is being shared on X to prove rows are better full stop.) Chairs can be swivelled - this is what matters most 👇
The 'Talk for Learning aspect of oracy...What should all teachers of every subject & all phases know? This from the Bullock Report (1975) should be posted up, in large format, on every Staffroom wall.

Mary Bousted is great for this, but I hope there’ll be conversation & collaboration with the curriculum & assessment review commission panel as these two things are intrinsically interlinked. Half the problem in education is too many things operating in isolation without looking at the big picture.
Exclusive: Former union leader Mary Bousted will chair a new commission on teaching to draw up suggestions for the government to solve the recruitment and retention crisis
