Our friend, Kent Wong.

Kent, I know there are a lot of us struggling to imagine the work ahead of us without your larger than life voice, presence, energy, and consistent ability to find a way forward.

When there was no organization for Asian Americans in the labor movement, Kent built one. Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance presente!

When national borders got in the way of international worker solidarity, Kent brought us all closer.

When educational institutions ignored the need for workers rights and nonviolent direct action courses, Kent taught them.
When the stories of working people, young organizers, and activists were untold, Kent wrote them.

Kent’s parents treated many of us like their kids too, so Kent felt like a brother in more ways than just work. When I had kids, Kent welcomed them to a community that he built, and over the years, he always asked about them. The last few years we talked about how hard it was when kids grow up and live far away from us but how we’d raised them to go into the world and make it better. In our conversations, he glowed with pride at his son’s latest book.

Whenever we needed someone to speak or just show up, Kent always showed up.

Many of us last saw you at the APALA National Convention in LA, where you were there as founding father and so proud of the leaders you made room for.

Because of you, we know what we need to do, but our hearts hurt.

It was such a beautiful day. Many of my staff who had been at the DOL for years said it was the most touching event they’d been to. Community members came from all over the country.

After the disgraceful firing of BLS Commissioner @erikamcentarfer.bsky.social last month, BLS staff knew that an honest Aug Jobs Report would incur the wrath of the Trump admin. But they did their jobs anyway. Unlike Trump World, BLS employees are unwilling to protect their own jobs above all else.

The hardworking & talented investigators at the DOL have an underrated skill in convincing workers to talk about abuses in their workplace even when those workers face retaliation for doing so. Today, those investigators are the ones speaking up about abuses in their own workplace.
