And I realize the rich spend a lot of money on art. But those are ~investments~. They're not aiming to support the artists whose work they love. They are hiding money, playing tax loopholes and speculating on future value.

The fact that we have all these billionaires walking around now and NONE of them are spending a significant chunk of their wealth patronizing the arts and on their interests is so telling. These people are utterly hollow. If I had billions I'd give 200k/year each to a bunch of artists first of all?

(that's also why it isn't always a shame when a historic building becomes something commercial. we have SO MANY museums & historical sites. an endless supply. as long as the renovations are done respectfully it's all good. soho house kept most of the original features of the DDR president's office)

We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right.

Now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases.

In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!). If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing).

In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our “treat adult users like adults” principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.

you look into any historic building in Berlin, especially near the center and in the east, and it has lived a million lives. you could make entire documentaries about each and every one of them.

Department store in the 1920s.

Headquarters of the Hitlerjugend in Nazi times.

Headquarters of the Politburo, then Institute of Marxist-Leninism in DDR times.

Squat house after the fall of the wall.

Now Soho House.

a large imposing building around 1930. a department store.

the same building in the later 1930s or early 1940s. now a nazi HQ

the building in the 1950s celebrating a political holiday in east germany

the building today. renovated to be a soho house.

and I'm really talking right smack dab center of the city. this place is 2 blocks from alexanderplatz (famous from the novel Berlin, Alexanderplatz, as well as being right next to the TV tower), the last holdout squat was one block over from the square. soho house is right around the corner now 😭

berlin was like actually empty for a good 15 years or so before it rapidly became an international cultural and business center. so people squatted in empty, fallen apart buildings. there was one last holdout squat building in the area until a few years ago which is now becoming a government agency.

didn't expect to find graffiti on the walls under the wallpaper. my guess is there was a squat in here at some point in the 90s or 00s. it used to be very very common in the years after the fall of the wall, especially in central berlin. ironically now the most valuable real estate.

interior of an apartment. the walls are stripped. the floors are in the process of being stripped. there's old graffiti on one of the walls, suggesting people used to squat in the building when berlin was going through a rougher time, maybe in the 90s or 00s.

it's just way too fucking easy to overstretch on credit. to assume the good times will keep rolling and get yourself into a situation where the money stops coming in and you are now colossally fucked.

getting a fucking porsche while your house isn't paid off yet is actual insanity.

my brother being at risk of losing the house he built 20 years ago he hasn't even paid off yet makes me even more dedicated to never, ever, fucking owe anyone money. no mortgages, no payments in installments, no loans. I'd rather live "below my means" for longer than create a financial clusterfuck.
