The latest @nhsengland.bsky.social board papers are worth reading, especially the update on #healthinequalities and the NHS Race and Health Observatory. And in particular this para on #accountability #yes www.england.nhs.uk/long-read/he...

More research is needed:
- To get a much better understanding of patient experienced costs
- Understand how costs differ with patient and tumour characteristics
- To understand the costs of rarer cancers
- Find out how innovation changes these costs over time

Policy implications:
- Cancer prevention strategies are crucial
- Early diagnosis will save money in many cases
- Improving integrated palliative care can improve end-of-life experiences and save money
- Improve data access to support more detailed analyses

Fascinating lecture by @trishgreenhalgh.bsky.social on How digitalisation increases health inequalities. Introduced by @auhe-leeds.bsky.social 's own @katiespencer.bsky.social at Leeds Uni Med School. I suspect (hope) lots of research ideas and plans are being generated to build on this. Thank you 🙏

If you want people to understand what you're doing, don't put figures and tables at the end.

Doctors are in the business of supporting vulnerable people.

As Virchow said: "The physician is the natural attorney of the poor."

Anyone who believes healthcare can ever be completely apolitical, or separate from the issues of the day, is kidding themselves.

Very excited to say that in 2025 I'll become an NIHR Advanced Fellow! @nihr.bsky.social Finding out how we spend money in NHS cancer care, if this influences the deprivation gap in survival and how policy can reduce the gap. @universityofleeds.bsky.social @annetteboaz.bsky.social @lshtm.bsky.social

We still have a relatively poor understanding of the relationship between evidence and policy. Program evaluation in particular is often motivated by a desire to make policy better. But how effective is program evaluation itself?Michelle Rao's JMP tackles this question. www.michellerao.com/research

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) against women is a major public health and inequality concern. It's not clear what causes it or how to reduce it. Gaby Deschamps' JMP considers that IPV is positively correlated with motherhood, and asks if we can understand why. www.gabrieladeschamps.com/research

Interesting to see this on AI-assisted qual. We’ve been trialling this at Nesta to assess strengths and weaknesses. Findings below.

Key thing for me is: don’t think about it as qual - you lose the richness of human conversation. But it is a powerful technique… 1/n
